Highschool Junior looking for a Uni

Hi, I am a hs junior is San Francisco, and my average gpa for soph-junior year is 2.89, although this year my grades have been going way up. I have about a 3.17 ( 3 A's 1 B 2 C's) Although the sad thing about my grades this year is that i have been getting A's in History, Chem and English but Math , Ethics and Spanish have really been brining my down.

Anyway what score on the SAT and ACT should i try and get, Can i still make it into a UC??? Or can i even make it into a cal state school? Also is FAFSA worth applying for? Should i look into the private sector, or are my grades not good enough? I really like SCU ( santa clara) hopefully i can get into there

ANY input would be really great, i am feeling really depressed and confused about this whole college thing...

Also, I did Football for 1 year, Crew for about 2 years

Do you think UC merced will be the easiest of all the UC schools to get into? Would i have a chance? Overall UC santa cruz would be my favorite school to get into, does it have an "early decision" program? Thanks

hs junior IN San Francisco
Also my school is a College Prep, so I am taking more than what is req for UC schools, 3 years history, 4 years math, 4 years english, 3 years language, 4 years science
( i am still a junior and will be taking the classes next year, total of 4)

Also because my school is Catholic, i take religion/ethics classes all 4 years also.

Any idea on what kinds of colleges I should look for? I have heard of the 2 year community college path then transfer, but my high school counselor has advised against that

Your counselor is being silly, there's nothing wrong with being a cc transfer and in the long run, it'll probably save you a bit of money. But otherwise, I think the CSUs would definitely be a match for you. As for the UCs, I think you should take either the SATs or ACT first before determining whether or not you qualify...

Just a suggestion. :)

Thanks dusk, Jonathan, any more suggestions on what i should do? Is the private sector worth looking into with my grades? any other tips into dealing with this depressing period would really help

anyone please?

Have you taken the PSAT?

First of all, work your butt off this year.

Now, according to, http://admissions.ucsc.edu/apply/freshman_guide.cfm , for UCSC, with your current GPA, you would need your total test score to be at least a 2698. Your "test score" is calculated like so,

If you took the SAT Reasoning Test: The university uses your highest scores in critical reading, math, and writing from a single sitting and adds them to your two highest SAT Subject Test scores from two different subject areas. The total of all five exam components (critical reading + math + writing + subject test 1 + subject test 2) equals your test score total.

If you took the ACT plus its Writing Exam: The university takes your highest math, reading, science, and combined English/writing score from a single sitting and converts them to equivalent SAT scores (see the translation table below). To give the ACT writing component equal weight to the SAT writing exam, the university multiplies the sum of your converted math, reading, and science scores by two-thirds, then adds the converted English/writing score. This subtotal is then added to your two highest SAT Subject Test scores from two different subject areas to reach your test score total ([math + reading + science] x 0.667 + English/writing + subject test 1 + subject test 2).

This is just to be eligible for admission. You should shoot for higher if you really want to be accepted!

Also, I couldn't find anything about EA/ED options, but I may have been looking in the wrong places. Good luck!

Thanks for that post, Yeah i am trying my best this year, I will be taking the ACT and SAT 2 times each, i dont know about the SAT subject tests though, i think i still have to sign up for those... Thanks again

any more suggestion on what i should be doing? What schools i should look at? Thanks

wow i seem to be the only person with a gpa lower than 3.5 posting on these forums...

I guess i have no choice but to do a JC, should i go to a CC or a private JC? :(

it is clear now that everyone on these forums are only knowledgeable when it comes to respectable colleges and have no help for the "primitive" people as myself

One post at a time is enough; you don't need five. And several people DID respond helpfully to your post, which is more than some posts get.

None of the UCs do that early decision stuff. If I remember correctly, they told us at one of our junior guidance seminars that Merced will admit you no matter what if you meet the eligibility reqs, which you can find here. http://admissions.ucmerced.edu/3.asp?uc=1&lvl2=2&lvl3=2&lvl4=25&contentid=17&bc=50
