Highschool Teacher Problems

So my math teacher was recently informed by my school that his contract would not be renewed and he would be without work after this school year. He has been a great teacher throughout the whole year however with this new development he has become far more careless and somewhat ruthless. For example today he gave us a test over stuff that we had gone over throughout the week, however it was far more in depth than we ever went in class and no one finished the test and I’m sure I did very poorly which in turn may cause me to lose my A for the semester. Though I think his intentions are to stick it to the school he is actually hurting the students far more. I guess my question is if there is anyway I can convey this dilemma to colleges that I apply to or include some sort of addendum on my application explaining my grade if it does drop. Thanks.

No. There is nothing you can say to colleges that doesn’t look like excuses or whinging. I doubt he is punishing students as a way of punishing the school even if it feels that way to you. He is probably feeling very down at the moment and may appreciate hearing from you that he’s been a great teacher and that his departure is a loss for the students. Then you leave it at that.

You will probably to do fine in the class overall even if one test was inexplicably hard. And in the absurdly unlikely scenario that everyone in the class saw their grades drop in the second semester, it just isn’t important enough to register on the college admissions factors Richter scale.

If A LOT of kids do poorly, the teacher may see the error of his ways and do a bell curve. But if he doesn’t, have your parents reach out to the teacher and if their complaint falls on deaf ears, they can contact guidance or the principal. There is always power in numbers, especially when parents band together, so if other parents lodge a similar complaint, you will most likely get somewhere. But, maybe you did just fine and you are worrying for no reason.

Writing this on your application would seem like whining/making excuses. If everyone’s grades for the semester/year dropped significantly your parents can bring it up with the department head, principal and/or your guidance counselor. .

Don’t mention it in your application; it will come across as whiny. Just talk to the teacher and tell him how you liked him and how he’ll be missed. He’ll feel better to know there is at least some appreciation from the student side. If his attitude doesn’t improve, bring it up to your parents or the school.
