I was going to take Chem 6b but heard some horrible things about the professor (Judy E. Kim?) and decided to move that to winter quarter so I can get some review in and a better professor.

In its place I decided to take a GE class (revelle) and was wondering which class you guys would recommend? I've taken interest into these two topics and can't decide which one to take yet. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

LIGN 7, LIGN 7 … why does that sound so familiar?

Oh right, it’s the first (and thankfully last) class I failed in college.

A medley of reasons:
I wasn’t interested in the material
I was forced into the class because I was trying to graduate by the end of fall quarter and nothing else fit my schedule
I went to class only to chat with my friend in the back row
Readings made no sense to me and I didn’t pursue it much further (see #1)

ANLD 23 was my replacement class the next quarter – that is LOADS easier (and infinitely more interesting). I haven’t heard great things about HILD 7A either; maybe you can take another GE requirement in its place?

Lots of reading but if you do the reading the quizzes/tests are fairly straightforward
4 quizzes (one every 2 weeks), no tricks
1 midterm which usually has 2 sections: One where you need to explain the significance of a term. (there’s a list of terms) and also an essay section.
1 final which is the same as the midterm but 2-3x longer
1 paper (6-7 pages double spaced)

When in college, never choose a class by subject matter. Even the most boring subject on paper can be made interesting and the most interesting subject on paper can be tedious. What I’m trying to say is choose the easiest class you can get your hands on.

from that description of hild7A lign8 was easier, 1 research paper (3pgs max), 5 online hws, 1 midterm (i think), 1 final

but that was lign8, i dont know how lign7 compares…but i really did think lign8 was interesting (languages and cultures of the world), so i didnt mind the readings, it was a nice break from science/math

astrina, can you go a bit more in depth about the assignments, workload, tests, etc. for LIGN 7? also, can you talk more about ANLD 23? (i think it’s ANTH 23 now? debating multicultralism?)

and i should take these ge requirement classes for a pass/no pass, right?

it’s been a while, but i can summon up a few poorly-repressed memories …

LIGN 7 had online homework assignments done on webCT (google if you don’t know), presumably based on reading in a reader that i wasn’t particularly fond of. my friend and i would set up phone dates to complete the assignment together and we usually wrangled a 75% on it by pure luck. no papers.

i think most of the grade is midterm-based. the class wasn’t intuitive for me, hence guessing wasn’t enough to get me through the midterm

ANLD (now ANTH) 23 had a pretty enthusiastic lecturer; a gang of us (Revelle seniors who needed to graduate that quarter) showed up en masse with our laptops and sat there for the 1h20min lecture 2x a week, AIMing each other while taking notes. there was one paper, one midterm (with all the essay questions given in advance), and one final (ditto). this was actually a great idea since my friends and i would split up the questions, answer them, and circulate it to the rest of the group. as for the papers, they were based on a few in-class or viewable-in-geisel videos and if you watched any of them with an available laptop and grabbed juicy quotes, they’d really help out your paper. as for the paper, it was really easy – i suck at writing in general (hum attests to that) but we all snagged As without any problem.

as for grades, i’d never take LIGN 7 again but i ended up getting an A- in ANTH 23 with little effort … sadly, i took it pass/fail.
