From what I hear from friends, Tufts University seems to be an amazing place and I am very much interested in going there. I want to learn Hindi/Urdu or Persian though, and neither of these are offered by Tufts. How is that possible? Tufts places a huge emphasis on global awareness, yet these two languages which are deemed critical by the government are not offered at the university. I love pretty much everything about this school but this is a huge letdown. I know that in the past they have offered hindi/urdu as an ex-college course, but since then there has been only 1 other hindi course I believe.

If I do attend Tufts, is there any way I can take hindi/urdu or persian courses for credit? Independent study, taking it at nearby colleges (though I don't know how easy that is, and now that I think about it, that is a flaw on my research), etc. I am willing to do anything to learn one of the 3 languages I listed above.

If you don’t want to commute to BU during the school year, you can also try to find a place to take them in the summer. But it has to be a recognized institution, and you need to get it approved by Tufts for credit.

Both Tufts and BU are on the Boston subway, but you have to transfer one line on your way there. Each trip takes at least half an hour, so you need to make sure there are no Tufts classes around that time on your schedule. If you get a car, then it’s a lot better.
In the end, commuting probably won’t be the most pleasant thing, but it’s do-able.

Also, you can always try to petition the ExCollege to offer these language courses. If you can gather enough students to sign on, it might just happen.
Maybe Dan can tell you more?

Cross-registering at BU for language courses is a pretty easy thing to arrange in terms of the paperwork (a couple of signatures), though Ace is right in outlining some of the transportation challenges to doing so. The nice thing is that the subways lines you need to go Tufts-BU are consistent, so you should be able to reliably plan.

The commute may stink, but there are a lot of students who actually commute because they take classes at the school of fine arts. If you are really set on it, you should do it.
