hahaha, whoops. i didn't realize how dumb some of my questions sounded.

i'm more referring to the ucla scene, not the LA scene. for some reason I can't get it out of my head the idea most ppl attending ucla are going to be pale, asian, studious, and lacking in coordination. (yeah yeah, i'm horrible, i know..) :P

oh, and to rephrase my dance studio question - are there any studios in the area that are CHEAP and good? i know it's LA and there's gonna be a whole mess of studios, but i emphasize the whole 'firsthand experience' thing - where do you personally recommend?

i'm thinking of trying out for samahang modern bc that's the only team i've heard of - that and nsu modern. never heard of aca before -thanks for the heads up misterr.

i'm currently taking breaking and popping classes at the Wooden center and there seems to be a couple of UCLA breaking groups/teams.

There's always free practice anytime after 10 PM to around 12 on tuesdays at wooden. Today 'Casper' Brown from Kickin it Old School came to practice and ryan conferido usually comes every week, which is awesome :D. They also have free practice at covel on fridays

I'm sure they can tell you more about the dance scene/studios/additional information when you get here and are more interested.

No offense to NSU Modern, but I wouldn't say they are the "best" dance group to join if you are into bboying. I cannot speak for Samahang or ACA, but I'd take a wild guess and say that Samahang is your best bet.

NSU Modern and I am sure ACA also go to Fusion.
I am kind of confused as to what you are looking for.
Bboying and hip-hop dancing are two different things to me.
I didn't mean to put down NSU Modern from my comment earlier (gotta support my club!), but if you want to do hip-hop dancing then I'd say any of the 3 clubs you mentioned are worth joining. As for bboying, I'd check out that practice they have at the Wooden Center that MadeInChina posted above. Those dance clubs don't usually break in their performance, unless its for a solo. Anyways, I hope what I said makes sense.

Haha, sorry, I kind of lumped everything together. I know both are different, but i'm used to the two kind of going hand-in-hand together. Like if I'm in a group that does ONE of the styles, it's bound to have the other. I didn't realize that wasn't necessarily the case here hahaha. :)

I DID say in my original post :

bboying, popping, locking, esp. commercial-ish hip hop

I'm much better at the commercialized hip hop dancing than i am at the formers. I'm not AMAZING though. How hard is it to audition for each of those clubs? What's the skill level (subjective, i know). Is competition tough when it comes to auditions?

haha i suggest either UB, Rutgers got a great dance team (they use stuff like ashanti and kelis in their routines) other than that id go with all black schools like howard (hip hop extraordinaires)

Hip hop is no-talent commercial garbage. I suggest you look into classic rock music. These artists have more talent than 50 cent , tupac, and all those other rap "musicians" combined. Classic rock is being listened to 30, 40 years on. Can you imagine anyone listening to p diddy or fiddy 10 years from now. Here are some classic albums you should start with.

Led Zeppelin IV

Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd

Back in Black by AC/DC

Revolver by the Beatles

Exile on Main Street by the Rolling Stones

Hip-hop is no talent commercial garbage? I guess I would have to agree when it comes to mainstream stuff, but I strongly disagree if your saying that about hip-hop in general cuz the real stuff is underground.

Everyone needs to respect others taste in music. I love old school punk (which is highly confined to itself as a genre) and some underground hip hop, but I never diss my friends for listening to mainstream hip hop, or pop, or wutever. What good music is is highly subjective, so if you go around making enemies cuz u feel the music they listen to is inferior, then ur just being arrogant.
