hispanic <3 Duke

okay, so i am in love with Duke, which is a very expensive school. i am applying ED, and if there are any scholarships/aid advice out there, i'd love to hear it. also, i'm curious about the National Hispanic Scholar thing. If anyone could explain cut-offs, gpa, and the difference between the "levels" i'd really appreciate it :)

it all depends on what state you live in..

i live in VA

This is what I did...You need to search the college board site for the National Hispanic Scholar Recognition thingy, and e-mail them asking them what the score cut was for VA.

It's too late for NHRP for this year. NHRP notifications to students and GC's came out in April and the return deadline for paperwork was May. They will send out the CD with names of NHRP scholars to colleges in September.

thanks for the info :)

to entomom: were students supposed to receive a notification in April? I didn't hear anything, but from the numbers I've heard, I'm pretty sure my score was high enough. Uh oh, now I'm worried...

Yes, my D's counselor got the information, as the GC needs to confirm the ethnic status of the student and report their GPA. There are 2 levels of recognition for NHRP and they are based on GPA. If you think you're qualified, you ought to call or e-mail NHRP as soon as possible to see if you can get on their list. Here is the webstie describing NHRP:
http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about/scholarships.html

I was told that the PSAT score cutoff for NHRP recognition in Florida this year was 195. Here's some info from an info sheet from NHRP:

Qualification for recognition is based on three factors:
(1) PSAT/NMSQT/PAA Test Score: A student must take the PSAT/NMSQT/PAA in his/her junior year and achieve a minimum cut-off score for the combined verbal, math, and writing skill sections. The cut-off scores vary each year by College Board region.
(2) Ethnicity: A student must identify himself/herself as Hispanic on the PSAT/NMSQT/PAA test taken in his/her junior year. The ethnicity information is then verified by the school counselor. To qualify for this program, the student must be at least one-quarter Hispanic according to the following definition: A person of Mexican-American, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or other Spanish cultures or origins. For purposes of this program, this does not include persons from Brazil, Portugal, or the Philippines. Hispanic is an ethnic category, not a racial category, and Hispanics may be of any race.
(3) Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA): Students must have a cumulative GPA (verified by the school counselor) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale to be recognized for this program. Students whose GPA is 3.0 through 3.49 are recognized as “Honorable Mention” finalists. Students whose GPA is 3.5 or above are recognized as “Scholars”.

my psat was 198 and my gpa is over 3.5, so i think i should have made it, or not?

yes you should, and you will, the person I e-mailed told me that they would contact the schools (send the certificates) in September, I dunno hey entomom received her son's already. Maybe her son took it in Oct 2004? But if you took it in Oct 2005, you should be notified this upcoming September

yea, i e-mailed my counselor, and she said that they usually just receive notification in september. she didn't mention anything about having to fill anything out or confirm anything in spring. thanks for the replies :)

latina & ana,
Please read the CB site that I gave you above, it gives a timeline of the NHRP process. If you took the PSAT as a Junior in Oct 2005 and your score qualified, your GC got paperwork to fill out (ethnicity & GPA, as patsmom referred to above) and return by May 2006. NHRP then decides who is a scholar and honorable mention, and they send a list of these students to colleges in September 2006.

I know that this spring there were several people who felt that their kids qualified but they didn't hear anything from their GC's. This could have happened for several reasons; for instance, if you didn't designate that you were Hispanic/Latino on the PSAT, because your school was unfamiliar with the program and the paperwork got lost on someone's desk somewhere, or maybe the CG filled out the paperwork for you and never told you.

ana is right that NHRP sends out the list in September, but will your name be on it??? If I were you I'd contact NHRP asap to find out if your school turned in the information for you this spring; and if not, if you can do it now so that you are considered for NHRP. By the way, my D took the PSAT in Oct 2005 like you did. Good luck!

Looks like we cross-posted. Your counselor must have filled out the information for you and sent it in--otherwise, how would NHRP know your GPA??

i asked my counselor and she said that she hasn't heard anything from NHRP. we get national hispanic scholars every year, and she said she doesn't fill anything out ever. i should mention i go to TJHSST, i don't know if that would make a difference or not. oh, i also e-mailed NHRP yesterday, hopefully i'll receive a response.

I don't want to argue with you GC, I'm only citing from the CB website. I'm glad you e-mailed NHRP, better safe than sorry.
