Would denominating myself as Jewish and Hispanic sort of "lessen" the value of being a true URM Hispanic?

If your mom is Jewish, then you are Jewish... and religion isnt signifcant, your hispanice wheter your Jewish or Muslim.

Where on the app does one specify religion?? On the CA the answer is nowhere. They do ask Hispanic, which BTW, does not necessarily mean being born in a spanish speaking country. If you specify both, that is what they think. If you are saying you are multi cultural - father hispanic, mother jewish, then just specify hispanic.

It's illegal for them to "lessen your chances" specifically because you're jewish, that'd be called "discrimination". They're only allowed to prefer you because you're Hispanic. Ahh the double-think of the 21st century.

For the purposes of the Common App, "Jewish" as an ethnicity (Ashkenazi or Sephardic) falls under white. If you're talking about religion, it's irrelevant.

Sephardic Jews can be, and many are, Hispanic, not white.

I doubt anyone here will have a good answer on this. ;)

This is a very interesting thread....I never tought about the sephardic angle.....

i am a sephardic JEw. my father was born in Greece. Am i white?
(my mother was born in New Jersey)

I think Greeks are considered white. Note, even Sephardic (as in originating from Spain, if I am not mistaken) is mostly white also, because Spaniards are considered white.

Now if you are Sephardic in that you are from Latin America... then that would be Hispanic I think.

The hispanic culture is generally a mix of spanish and indian cultures. If someone was born in a latin american country to Swedish parents? Does that make you hispanic? nope! Same with Jews.

BTW, the Sephardim are descendent of Jews from Spain and Italy. They generally headed east - and tend to be the Jews of the Mid-east. There used to be a very population in Iran, but they mostly left after the revolution.

If a Jewish person is living in So America, they probably immigrated from eastern europe about the same time Jews were immigrating to the US (turn of the last century and then around the holocaust) . They are mostly Ashkenazi.
