hispanic chances

okay so im a sophomore in MA and i was wondering what to do to increase my chances of getting into an ivy league school
my...
-gpa 4.17
-female hispanic (1/2 dominican , 1/2 puertorican :] )
**i know harvard is looking for hispanics in MA (maybe i have a chance)
-#2 in my class of like 70
-honors biology and english
-plan on taking APs next year and senior year but my school only offers AP calc and AP spanish so im screwed
-small school-just opened a few years ago
-no legacy
-poor :[
-volunteered at a retirement home for a few months
-work at the local newspaper for one and a half years
-plan on running for class president next year
(ill prob. make it--no one runs)
-HORRIBLE PSAT scores

What are my chances? how can i increase these chances?

it looks like you have a strong chance. Just keep doing well in your classes and keep up the gpa. You still have time to do well and take your SAT twice just to make sure you have high scores. Maybe you should look into Columbia as well, they have programs that help low-income families (I come from a low-income family too).

In my high school, they had the same situation where students were only able to take AP Spanish. That should not be a problem though. One of the girls at my school who graduated with me goes to Swarthmore, a top LAC, so maybe the AP thing won’t be such a big deal. You should look into top LACs too.

Just keep up the good work…and good job for representing Dominicans! (I’m Dominican too) :)

every kid i know of average stats are getting into ivy leagues for sports! turn back time and own at a sport!!

haha, dbear…I think that is why they are called ivy leagues. its for the sports. I am alright at wrestling… placed in sectionals, but didnt make it to state :(.

GOODLUCK LIZ! I think being bilingual is good. Also, do you have people who know you very well to write recommendations?? (good recommendations always help) In addition, i would suggest making a resume just to keep track of your activities.

yeah i know it’s a sports league. i never meant anything bad by that comment. by average i meant nobody who won first in some nationals robotics contest, invented something, took 15 APs… cuz if you look at the harvard and princeton stats kids have done ridiculous things like that. i simply meant kids who lived more normal lives and the whole sports thing just helps cuz it is a sports league. (and i said that to liz cuz she didn’t have any sports.) sry if i offended you/anyone.

oh but liz, ditto what he said ^
