Did you take the PSAT? How did you do? Are you eligible for the National Hispanic Recognition Program which is based on your PSAT scores?

@momrath I don’t think it is fair to assume the OP will qualify for QB just because she is Hispanic and has a tight budget… On another thread, there is a poster within the top 5% of earners in the country, but has a 10,000 budget.

@aunt bea What do you mean by “It is for very low-income hispanics who are typically first generation.” There are absolutely no income requirements to qualify for NHRP. Where are you getting your information that its typically first generation students who qualify?

@RILEYFANNING

What income ranges are you talking about?

and, isn’t the QB date past?

@ScienceGirlMom I believe aunt bea is talking about potential scholarships for NHRP. I know Carleton has a $2K scholarship for that but that’s all.

@anniebeats, Unless the OP provides more information we have no way of knowing if she would meet QuestBridge financial criteria. That her family can only devote $10K a year to her education may be an indication of low income, or it may be due to poor planning or lack of interest in funding education. She may be aware of what QuestBridge has to offer or may have never heard of them. We don’t know the actual situation.

In light of these unknowns, I stand by my suggestion that the OP contact QuestBridge. That she is Hispanic is not the point. We know that she is having trouble affording a college that suits her academic achievements and that her family income is variable year to year. QuestBridge may help or may be a total bust. Who knows?

@mom2collegekids, the QuestBridge deadline is September 26.

ormdad, thanks. This is a great link.

ir4550, thanks. That is a new one.

bopper, yes. Yesterday, I received my letter telling me I was a NHRP Scholar - 5,000 out of 250,000 recognized, those above a 3.5 GPA were “Scholars” and those with a 3.0-3.49 were “Honorable Mention”.

You might want to look at the list of the most economically diverse top colleges (New York Times 9-9 online) and article “Top Colleges that enroll rich, middle class and poor.” dated Sept 8, 2014 - both under “the Upshot” Article by David Leonhardt. They showed a chart which had endowment per student (Pell Grant Recipients) with the level of the school endowment per student. Some colleges will work harder for having the economic diversity with top students. School list also shows net price for low to middle income families.

Good luck @rileyfanning

@ScienceGirlMom @Erin’s dad is spot on. Went through this with 3 URM kids. NHRP was a label for them. Good luck Riley! Use SOSConcern and other poster info for more information.
