Would like to Major in Economics/PoliSci (not sure yet) with a minor in Romance Languages (Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese).

omg, you can minor in romance languages! i wannna do that!!!!!! im hispanic too, so HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK!! (well, hopefully, lol)

I saw the major at one school and I'm not sure how many others offer it. My plan is to, if the minor is not offered at a school i get into, to make an interdisciplinary certificate in Romance Languages (or something of that sort). I am really passionate about languages, but the lack of a major would not have a major influence on my college decisions.

Yale has Linguistics major, anyone know what that is?Possibly Foreign Languages?

Apply to UC Berkeley, we got top notch Econ and Political Science Departments and our Spanish-Portuguese Language Department offers a minor. So please do consider applying to Cal sice we have everything you say you want.

Hispanic is a good hook if you're first gen and go to a crappy inner city school. Year abroad, are you kidding? When you go to a good surburban school and have parents who went to top colleges, it isn't a hook. You've had every advantage yet you have below average stats (the 1220 SAT wouldn't cut it for first generation!). Won't work.

first gen: check.... dad no hs, mom no college
crappy inner city school: no... suburbia
parents who went to top colleges: no...
below average stats: by CCstandards, maybe...

is it a hook? :)

Bobby, quite frankly i simply cannot take you seriously. Maybe when you learn some Math (620+700=1320) you comments will have some standing. Technically speaking I am a first generation Hispanic, plus it is impossible for any institution to know how deeply rooted I am within the country.
And as I said before, I am anticipating a 1450+ as I have been consistently scoring well on practice SATs.

Except I have better stats and I will be 1st generation to even finish High School.

This thread is actually encouraging. Thanks a lot bro, for giving me a boost of esteem.

Btw, I have a 4.0, I am lower class (<40K), and I attend a crappy-ass school in WA.

However, good job on representing Hispanics nationwide.

Just clarification, I never once wrote that my hook was being Hispanic was my hook, my year abroad would be.

And was the comment on representing Hispanics nationally sarcasm?

Gumball, your courseload isnt exactly heavy (of course depending on your yaer, i figured you were a junior), you mentioned it on another thread.
Bobby, you have got to be one of the most pessimistic people on CC

I am a sophomore. I will be a junior next year, lol.

So I will take:
AP English
AP Biology
AP European History
AP United States History
AP Statistics
AP Spanish Lang
Trig/pre-calc

Not bad for a Mexican, I guess.

Nobody ever really answered my question. I have only been acosted with claims that I am not a true Hispanic, I'm a Colombian citizen.

Gumball, that is a hardcore schedule APEuro and APBio are heavy. Youre pretty much set pending your performance in school is not based on the fact that it is a "****ty WA"school. Considering the AP offerings that you are provided with there, I would say that the school offers high levels of rigor.

Nah, 60% of those classes are 'new.' First time they'll be offered in school history.

Please keep your terminology straight, in talking about college admissions: first generation means first generation to go to college in your family, not first generation to come to this country. Thus, you can be any ethnic or racial background and be first generation.

While bobby came on a little strong, the title of the thread is rather misleading. And there is validity in the fact that having Yale legacy, top HS, year abroad, etc. will mean that your Hispanic edge, while it may be a tipping point for a top candidate, will not be a major hook for an otherwise average Yale applicant. I say this as the mother of a middle class Latina, just trying to keep it real.

Get off your overprivileged ass already.

This is all great feedback on the fact that I am basically white, but what are my chances at the schools that I stated above, crossing Yale off, I understand its a reach, if even a dream. The school is common Ap so i might as well give it a shot. I also wasnt too clear with the legacy, it is my Grandmother's side of my family, they are about two generations deep at Yale.

Any help fellas?

eh??......

Linguistics is the study of the sounds, forms and meanings of language-- phonetics/phonology, morphology/syntax, semantics/pragmatics. It can also include the history and evolution of language, or the relationship of language to culture, psychology or neuroscience.

A linguistics major might study the structure of other languages, but it is not a foreign-language major.

Only a parent can make you a legacy at Yale. Year abroad is not a hook. Good luck though! You're right, it's 1320, only about 150 points below average.

well tossing Yale out of that list, maybe an Orange County-esque (the movie) mix up will occur, you never know, what are my chances at the other schools?
