Hispanic Scholarship Fund 2022

Just wanted to share the good news. Earlier I mentionned my daughter decided not to reapply for HSF scholarship funds since she wasn’t likely to get any since she didn’t last year and didn’t want to wear out her welcome with her recommenders asking them for additional letters of recommendation for HSF. So she focused on her degree program scholarships instead and completed their lengthy application and obtained several very good personalized letters of recommendations from professors who know her work well. She was just notified that she received a $750 scholarship from her major (visualization) and $2000 from the larger program (school of performance, visualization, and fine arts)! :tada:

That is awesome, congratulations!

We live in Buffalo, NY so we were hoping for one in NYC or even Chicago (which is a cheap direct flight) but none of the live events will work for us, so he registered for the virtual event.

I was selected as an HSF Scholar a few weeks ago and I’m wondering if anyone has any past experience on how much is awarded on their scholarships usually? I submitted my Financial Aid letter but have submitted an appeal with my school on that and I’m waiting to hear back.

Congratulations! The monetary award is need based. Some get none. Some get $500-$5000.

My son attended the virtual 2023 HSF celebration last night. It was a nice program and very informative. If you are a winner, they stressed that only 8% of over 120k were selected (about 10k.) So congrats!

Did your daughter end up getting off the waitlist for the Leadership Conference? Sounds like a great opportunity.

She ended up not be able to attend the first part which was virtual and that was required to get off the waitlist. I think she would have made it off the list though. We did attend the virtual Scholar Celebration this year, and she continues to receive other opportunities, so we will see how it all plays out. She is a finalist for a couple other scholarships offered through HSF and we are waiting to hear the results of those. Also waiting to hear results of GMiS. :crossed_fingers:

That’s too bad it didn’t work out but tough to balance the schedule for sure! Are you familiar with College Success Scholarship (TELACU)? My son was alerted to that one via HSF but he doesn’t meet the criteria of first generation. They told him to apply anyway, that priority was given to those met full criteria but he was still able to apply so he did. He will be moving into to the dorms at Case Western on Friday-they invited him to Envision weekend (diversity leadership weekend) so he starts a few days before other students. The summer went too fast-going to be hard to say goodbye!

Not familiar with TELACU, but looked just looked it up. My daughter is also not first generation (she is second), but it looks like it also may have income qualifications that we would not qualify for. Thank you though, it is always good to hear info about additional scholarships to investigate. People always say there are tons of scholarships out there - but they can be a lot of work and most of them are for $250, or $500 or at best $1000, so the students have to weigh the effort versus reward. The ones with a range (e.g. $500-$5000 like HSF) it’s tougher, because you hope if they get it, they will get something in the middle or towards the top. When Tuition + R&B & fees is in excess of $80k, it takes a lot to make a dent.

Yes, some scholarships are quite competitive. Curious to see if we get any $ from the HSF (think they announce in December?) I just dropped off my son to Case Western and can’t say enough about the DEI efforts and how they “walk the walk” when it comes to welcoming and recruiting a diverse student body with open arms. We were so impressed. My son was thrilled to be a part of Envision weekend (a diversity leadership initiative) and is already talking about being involved in their cultural clubs.

They announce the amounts around December. Last year I think it was November 28th. Before that, the students have to verify enrollment to remain eligible. To do that they have to submit an enrollment verification form from the university. My daughter was able to just downroll the form from her student hub, showing that she was enrolled full-time, how many credits, and the university, etc. It took like 2 minutes to get the form. Some people had a hard time trying to use the clearinghouse method. That notice will probably come next week, since some students start school after labor day, and there will be about 3 weeks to complete it.

Speaking of DEI initiatives, just saw an announcement that Texas A&M is canceling their freshman DEI lessons on ‘respect and inclusion’ per new state law that bans mandatory diversity training. So, again I am very happy I did not let my daughter attend school in Texas and did not let her apply to any schools in Florida because I knew this was coming. Since she was auto-accept, I told her to apply to one state school as a safety-school and she chose UT Austin. She applied to two private schools in Texas, but when she visited, she did not like the atmosphere of either - they were not for her.

We live in Texas and my daughter is at A&M. Yes A&M and all Texas public universities are in process of canceling their DEI initiatives in hiring and curriculum in response to state law. Recruitment is exempt and they can still recruit underrepresented students populations through targeted recruitment programs, visits, scholarships, etc.

My son had to complete the "Scholar Pledge & Update Information” form by 11/29 so hopefully we will find out if he received a monetary award soon. Not holding our breath, but hoping he will at least get a small amount.

My son as well. Not really expecting anything, but it sure would be nice! When would we know?

I think we hear in early December, they don’t give a specific date. Hope our sons both get a monetary award :crossed_fingers:I wonder if they will also give a notice if they DON’T get an award.

There is a virtual workshop on December 9th (I believe resume building, interview skills?) that HSF students can sign up for FYI. My son works in a research lab on campus, so he is scheduled to work at that time but might be able to change his hours.

Good luck!

Thanks for the heads up on the virtual event. He didn’t get an email, but he found a notification in his account. He just registered.

Good luck to your son!

My daughter mentioned the virtual workshop, I have to remind her about it and tell her to sign up. I suspect participation may help with scholarships down the road. One of the first questions the scholarship asks is “what HSF events have you participated in?” or something like that. She was going to do the Leadership Workshop this summer but it conflicted with her fellowship.

She also submitted her pledge - this year she did not receive money (but had the verbiage in the original acceptance that if money was available, she could still receive a scholarship). The pledge email did not mention anything about scholarships. Last year, the pledge told her scholarship amount and sponsor.

She has also received nominations to apply for other HSF sponsored scholarships, she made it to the finalist stage for two. Of the two, she was waitlisted for one and for that one she found out this week should was not selected. So, I really hope something comes up with HSF. :expressionless:

Great point! They should participate in any they can! So did you daughter get a $ award the first year but not the second? Or did I misunderstand that? Good luck! Not sure when they’ll hear-hopefully soon!
