Hispanic scores

Ok I got a 29 on my ACT and 1260 on the SAT. is that good for being a hispanic?? i also got a 3 on the AP eng lang exam and 5 on us hist. what do u guys think?

It depends on your particular circumstances. Is it good for a privileged Hispanic kid with wealthy parents and private tutors? Not particularly. Is it good for an underprivileged Hispanic in a crappy school system who doesn't have enough money to buy practice books? Sure.

ARE U CRAZY!!?!?!?!? Yale's avg. ACT score is a 28.8. Your ACTs are fine, considering some whites get into Harvard, Cornell, Yale, etc. all the time with lower school. Specifically, about 25% at each of those schools.

yeah uh 93% of kids at my school are below the poverty line. 99% kids there are hispanic. but my school (unbelieveably) has the IB program but i dropped out of it after the structure prevented me from taking dual credit, calculus and other classes i wanted to take. besides the 2005 IB class is 9 people. we had started at 41.

Being Hispanic really helps you to get in ANYWHERE...
i cant solely base your acceptance on your SAT and ACT
i assume you are one of the smartest hispanics in your school

what is your unweighted gpa, weighted gpa, class rank, and extracurricular activities?

you said your school offers IB?? how many courses have u taken? what grades did you get?

does your school also offer the AP program? many IB schools offer AP and MYP as well.. did you enroll in the AP program too??

So far, I can say you have a decent shot at the lower ivies..

Of course it is.....
wheather you are Hispanic or not that is a very good score

Where I live being Hipanic is a majority, thought I know that elsewhere we are a minority so, it definetly has its advantages -besides knowing two languages

yeah i'm ranked 4/244. weighted gpa 95.97....as for the IB i got out before my junior year so i was only in the pre-ib program but i'm glad i'm not in it. well i am taking ap calc ab, ap eng lit, ap eco, ap govt so i'm glad i got out of IB otherwise i would have been stuck taking crappy courses like math studies and tok which offer no college credit really. i think i am more aimed at getting my college credit thats why i got out

You are top 2% and you are hispanic..
You definetely have a shot at Ivies..

Weighted GPA is 95.97
What is your unweighted?? Ivies look at unweighted and class rank..
did u get all As and Bs?

It's weird that a hispanic school is offering both IB and AP...

Out of ivies, I would say:

Brown= Good Match
Columbia= Good Match
Harvard= Reach
Yale= Reach
UPenn = Good Match
Princeton = Reach
Darthmouth = Good Match

if u get ur SAT to 1350.. i would say you're safe at UPenn

I dont know my unweighted GPA but i have a lot of extra curriculars. Editor of the school paper. co-chair of the student advisory committee to the board of education. caption of my UIL social studies team. captain of UIL current events team. UIL journalism team member. NHS, student council, interact club. lots of community service. i passed 2 AP tests already and taking 4 more. ummmm thats about it, all i can think of for now.

You would have pretty good chances, comparitavely, at any school not matter what your background, but being from a poor school and being a minority will definatly help out. I agree with variances assessment for Ivies. You would also have good shots at Duke, UNC, Chicago, Northwestern, Wake, etc. Research any school that you might like and narrow it down from there. If you applied ED anywhere, you would have really good chances.

The average ACT score for hispanics overall is 18.8. Even among students with self reported GPAs in the 3.5-4.0 range, the average is only 21.9. Assuming that the standard deviation follows the national avg of 4.8 for the composite score, you're probably around the 98th-99th percentile among other hispanic students. (which would translate to a 31 or 32)

The SAT is a little bit harder to figure out with exact numbers because only percentiles for Verbal and Math individually are given, but I would say that the average is somewhere between 850 and 900. I would guess, based on the percentiles provided, that a 1260 would put you right around the 96th-98th percentile among other hispanic students. (which would most likely translate to a score from 1400-1450)

Wow, slipstream99...you happen to know similar statistics for african americans would you.... I know that blacks generally score the lowest on standardized test what is a 1320 SAT and 31 ACT for an african american?

i don't know what the exacts stats are but i read in some washington post article that 72 blacks scored over 1500 while only 192 scored over 1450, also somehting like 1300 blacks scored over 1300....considering a little over 100,000 blacks take the test each year....a score over 1300 should put y0u in the top 1.5% of blacks

fut18000:

860 looks to be the african american average. A 650 on math and verbal is 98th percentile, so I would surmise that a combined score of 1320 is 99th percentile.

17.1 is the ACT average and among students with GPAs from 3.5-4.0, the average only goes up to 20.3. Using the same standard deviation of 4.8 again (this could be wrong - I have no better number, though), a 31 puts you well into the 99th percentile range.
