Many PUBLIC universities no longer include ethnicity in admissions decisions, but the private schools - especially many of the ivy's - do still give an admissions boost to URM's. By admissions boost, I mean they will tend to choose an URM with competitive stats over a non-URM with similiar stats --- but not a guarantee of acceptance by any means. The original poster has some nice, solid stats and his geographic location (Texas) and URM status will boost his application somewhat. Still, it's a crapshoot for anyone applying to the most selective Ivy's - He should still consider Princeton a major reach, in my opinion but it's definitely within the "possible" range. Best of luck~

ooooo, sleepisabliss, don't be so ornery. We are all here in good faith and an optimistic outlook, right?

I appreciate your post, recent poster, and thank you very much for the advice.

...and now I bump--

I think I will bump again--

affirmative action is gayness. who cares what racial ethnicity you are!!! you should have to go through the same pains as everyone else!

That is telling, you equate a sexual preference with affirmative action.

Obviously, everyone cares about peoples racial ethnicity, or it would not be a topic for consideration. For URM, who do not appear white, their pains are often more severe than for whites (who are in the majority). Even people who have sexual preferences that go against the 'norm' can hide (hence the term 'closet') especially if their skin color places them in the majority. Using racial ethnicity, like using legacy status, socioeconomic background, geographic residency, national residency, athletic ability, other talents, developmental cases, extra-curricular envolvement, et al. is a part of selective college admissions--since different characteristics and talents make up each individual.

The objective of colleges is to build a divers CLASS, not accept ALL 1600/4.0+ students. That would be disingenious, if your arguement says everyone should be treated the same, as people in society as a whole are not, and do not have equal access or equal opportunity before college. Convienient that you can ignore inequity until you might not benefit from being in power during the college admissions cycle.

The subject has been talked about ad nauseum...check out the archives. Enough, already! Sorry about the flame.

Just my opinion.

Don't worry sleepisabluss--I forgive you

Affirmative Action is not gay.

Only the insensetive would say that. The fact that most people from minorities are poor, have a low quality of life, and live in the slums should and is being taken into account.

Carolyn - most Public Universities include ethnicity. The thing is that it's under a different name. I highly doubt that UCLA's 15% latino statistic is a compilation of truly qualified latinos. I can personally vouch for it being that I'm Mexican, I have no ECs, and I didn't work 10% as hard as most of the people posting in there forums and I still got into the most prestigious Universities in the world and having met many unqualified minorities who got into prestigious schools on account of their race.

Anyway, you have a good chance, Valdez. Although it seems you've been abandoning the mother language :(

Don't let your roots die! Colleges don't like that.

Abandoning the mother language? Never!!! (I do believe I mentioned that I speak Spanish at home in my original post). Unfortunately, I must post in English here at collegeconfidential.com (absurd, isn't it?).

Got to let colleges know that you didn't abandon it then. Although I hear that even the whitewashed have good chances.

Oh, they know I'm proud--believe me (I sent in a picture of what my friends call my "Mexican" ring).

bump-------

Two pages is certainly enough posts so I don't think you need a bump. I think you have excellent chances (esp ED), obviously helped by your ethnicity. Decent SAT scores and transcript helps as well. Good luck!

bump--just to spite Althalius

bump please

i kno a kid who had a 1530, 4.5 gpa, 7th in the class, with amazing e/cs, and his brother attending princeton who got deferred and rejected from princeton

um...yes...i'm sorry for him...now was he mexican?

martin, stop worrying! you are mexican...you have high SAT scores...you have affairs with college counselors worldwide...you'll be fine!
