Hispanics considered URMs?

Technically they're not a race in and of themselves (can be Caucasian, black, etc.), even though the college check boxes paint it out that way. I check Caucasian because I'm Iranian, but Iranians in the country are a minority (as to whether they are UR, I have no idea). However, I stated it somewhere in my app, mostly because never meeting that half my family has to do with identity.

I've seen a couple people on the "accepted" thread with stats quite close to mine and other factors about where I'd rate mine. Incidentially they were both Hispanic. So am I thinking unrealistically when I think that I have a decent shot as well?

To deal with the question at the top of the thread, yes, Hispanics are considered URMs. I believe that Iranians usually aren't. I can't really comment on what that means for acceptance, however.

Of course hispanics are a race. What kind of statement is that?

^^^
You might want to read up before making bold statements like that. Hispanics are most definitely not a race, but a fabrication of the political machine. Here is one interesting discussion

HispanicTrending: What Race Are Hispanics?

The US Census no longer considers them a race

The misconception that Hispanic is a race is so ingrained in this country that many Hispanics are confused themselves. This creates a big problem in marketing research, because many would check “Other” if “Hispanic” were not included in the race category. Yet, many Hispanics would check “White” or “Black” and not “Hispanic”, if “Hispanic” was included as a category. The answer is to divide the question like the census does and to pay close attention to how the questions are worded.

I'm confused myself and I'm "hispanic." xD I dunno, my parents are from Central America and that's the closest I guess.

"Of course hispanics are a race. What kind of statement is that?"

Do some research before acting like I'M the misinformed one

There is no need to get offended. There are many views on this subject. If you do your homework and check genetic research it will show you that they do consider hispanic a race.

differences of opinions are ok. relax!

Hispanics are not a race. Hispanics are people born in the Americas who share a language and culture handed down to them from Spain. Spain is an European country. Hispanics can be of pure Spanish descent, thus white. They may also be a combination of Spanish, Native American, or African. There is NO such thing as a Hispanic race. I don't understand why this simple concept is so difficult to grasp.

Very well said omzac!

In 1997, the Office of Management and Budget, which is the standard setting agency in the Federal Government for racial/ethnic data collection, issued a revision of Statistical Policy Directive No. 15, which stated the following:

[quote]
The revised standards will have five minimum categories for data on race: American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, and White. There will be two categories for data on ethnicity: "Hispanic or Latino" and "Not Hispanic or Latino."

You all may want to read this document; it's pretty interesting. It is based on these definitions that colleges collect and report data to the Feds.

Revisions to the Standards for the Classification of Federal Data on Race and Ethnicity

That would be fine if it was in fact an opinion. I should do MY homework? I can't believe you have the audacity to say that. Omzac summed it up perfectly.
