I'm looking for a historical research opportunity for the summer...I really love history and may want to major in it in college. I am a current junior, I took AP world history last year and am taking AP us history and want to explore some research opportunities this summer with the intent to formulate a research paper for submission to a publication.
are there any summer research programs for history? i know of many for math/science, but really want history.

Here's my suggestion (I got my MA in history):

Look for an internship with a historical society. Look for an *accredited *historical society, but one that is of small to medium size.

Why? Because you will be working in a professional environment AND you will be able to really delve into the research. You will probably work really closely with a mentor (either archivist or curator) and be very involved in your project (which might be something like doing research for an upcoming exhibit, etc). You can use that research as a basis for a research paper, and probably get great guidance and support from your mentor.

If you look for an internship at a really big place, you will be less involved with the actual "meat" of the organization.

I recommend this because you will get experience researching AND will also get work experience which is very important. You'll get a sense of how historians deal with practical issues like budget constraints, etc.

bump... please reply anyone else! and thanks to virginia!
