Can anyone who has taken history 3A (history of scientific revolution with Terrall) or history 3C (history of modern science, relativity to DNA with De Chadarevian) tell me about the class(es)? Your experience with the professor, difficulty of the class, advice for people taking the class, anything really...
Thanks in advance!

I’d like some info on this as well.

I’m currently enrolled in 3A for Fall Quarter but I’m not really sure what to expect.

I took 3C last fall. There were I think 4 books assigned, many shorter readings, plus 2 movies. It’s a pretty typical GE class in terms of difficulty; the reading load is maybe on the light side. The material is fairly interesting, though maybe not what you are expecting. A lot of the class was about Eugenics in its varying forms, and the focus is more on evaluating the scientific process and its role in society rather than learning who discovered what in what year.

When I took it, the class was taught by both Porter and de Chadarevian. I thought Porter was more interesting and a better lecturer. They also had different focuses (Porter generally focused on physical science, de Chadarevian on bio), so I’m not sure how that will affect the content. Having a good TA is obviously important, but you don’t have much control over that. Not sure if there’s any specific advice necessary - do your reading before discussion section.

I had history 3c last fall and de chadarevian taught it along with porter. Personally I thought the class was boring (sounded interesting when I enrolled). Like most north campus classes, you’ll do lots of reading. The quantity of the reading isn’t horrible, but it’s just the content that I found difficulty with (thought it probably cuz I’m a math/science person). Maybe you’ll enjoy it. Discussion actually consisted of discussions with people. You talk about morality and implications of DNA, nuclear weapons, science/technology etc…

We had i think 3 essays, one of which was the midterm, and a final that consisted of an essay/short essay and short answers (I actually thought the final was pretty easy considering how much I didn’t like the class).

PM me if you are interested in buying the books you need for 3C

Awesome - it sounds like 3C is doable. Thanks for your input!

Now anyone who’s taken history 3A? Bruinwalk says Terrall is absolutely terrible…
