History Major and Dance Minor

Hello, my daughter wants to major in history and dance. She took 8 years of ballet based and is currently doing jazz/lyrical/hip hop dance.

Are these combination of majors acceptable? If so, please give other suggestions of universities to further look into.

She wants to apply to UF, Georgetown, BC, BU, University of Miami.

Sarah Lawrence College is probably the most inappropriately recommended school on these forums, but your daughter’s combination of majors may actually be a good match for that school, which emphasizes visual and performing arts (including dance) and a few other subjects (history, literature, psychology, and writing), and interdisciplinary combinations of the subjects. However, if she wants to go there, she needs to be sure of wanting to study what it has depth in, since other subjects offered appear to be only offered for students seeking breadth.

But it is expensive, so check the financial aid and net cost estimates.

Duke is one of the few top universities to have a strong dance program, particularly ballet, and is home to the American Dance Festival. History is also top-notch.

Other schools frequently cited for having good dance programs:

Bard
Barnard/Columbia
Conn College
Cornell
Emory
Goucher
GWU
Michigan
Muhlenberg
Northwestern
Skidmore

Unfortunately, without knowing what she’s looking for, suggestions will be hit or miss…beyond those programs, what does she want in a college?
