history major

What are some strong undergrad universities for history majors?

Lack of response is because there are too many to post; you need to refine and narrow your question.

Colgate, definitely, if you’re looking among LACs.

pixy> What sort of history are you looking to study? U.S., Africa, European, Middle East/Asia, World, Ancient?

not to completely hijack..personally ancient…feel free to hijack back whenever you wish

I am interested in the responses you get. My rising sophmore son loves history, especially American history. Although he is really good in math and science, it doesn’t look like they are something he wants to make a career out of. Right now he would major in history, get a law degree and run for public office.

I figure if we start looking at schools during vacation my son may have a good idea of what appeals to him in two years.

mamom, sounds like I’m your son, lol. I love U.S. history and U.S. relations with other countries.I want to major in History, Poli Sci or Criminal Justice, but I’m interested in the results too.

Yeah, I’m looking at a lot of schools, but my two big dream schools are Notre Dame and the Naval Academy. Not sure about their history departments and neither have CJ as a major, but I love those 2 schools. I’m also thinking about the University of Dayton, Chaminade, Illinois, Miami, Coast Guard, Depaul and a couple of other schools. I haven’t really done much research into specific fields at each school, I’m having a hard time finding out who has the best or really good programs in certain majors, but I haven’t really looked that hard.

I’d also be interested to know which schools have strong history programs, especially us history

Mamom, don’t just assume he will want to earn a law degree. The study of history can be a career in itself. If he is very competant in it, he could go on to graduate school in history. It is almost disrespectful in the casual manner in which you wrote to use a history degree to “get a law degree and run for public office,” which is unnecessary for public office anyways.

Hmm seems like the purpose of this thread kind of never happened…but I would love to know the answer as well.
I’ve asked the same question and got answers such as Yale and Harvard to which I though “Uh…duh.”
I’m looking at Sewanee, Rhodes, Furman, Davidson, etc. Small liberal arts colleges. I just can’t seem to find a good answer about their history programs.
Any ideas?

Student35, Not assuming he will want to get a law degree, it is what he recently told me he wanted to do. What did surprise me was his ambition to run for public office. But, he is only 15, nothing is set in concrete.
