I am about to graduate with a BA in Art History and a BS in Business Admin. I applied to grad school programs for Art History and also for History. My original intent was to get my MA in History if I was accepted to a good school but after reading the posts on this site I am starting to question my decision. Would it be better to get my MA in Art History instead? I do not intent to get my PhD and do not want to teach. I am worried that an MA in History will limit my job options. Does anyone have any advice for me?

It would help you to think about your goals…What kind of career are you considering? What do you want to DO with your degrees? Are you still waiting to hear from your grad school application?

Art history won’t have better job prospects. You would need a drastic change in field.

why do you want the MA? what’s the point if you’re not going to continue onto the PhD?

in some states, high school teachers need an MA in order to be qualified for administrative positions (principal, vice principal). for museums and curational stuff, an art history or public history MA is a definite boost to a CV. but what else? you need to tell us what you want out of a career before we can advise you on what degree, if any, to pursue.
