I'm planning to major in Humanities/Social Sciences in College. My high school requires only 3 years of History(2 yrs)/Humanities(1 yr). Is it required/better to take 3 or 4 years of History in High School? Do the top colleges require 3, 4 years of History for Humanities majors?

The majority of colleges have a 3 year requirement, keeping in step with most school systems. However, some of the top colleges may have 4 years as “recommended.” If you’re concerned, is their a social studies elective you could take like AP Government.

Also, how do you mean 3 years of history = 2 years? If you’re on a semester-based schedule one credit on your transcript will equal one year of the class.

My HS requirement is 2 yrs of History and 1 yr of Humanities=Art, Music, Philosophy. Both combined 3 years. Maybe 2 yrs of History is not good enough for colleges for a Humanities major?

I don’t think they’ll reject you for not having a 4th history class, but if it’s something you enjoy, why not take it? We didn’t have senior year history at my school, so a friend and I ended up doing AP Euro as an independent study just for kicks. Maybe there’s a class you’d like to take that isn’t offered that you could do with a teacher as in independent study or something

The requirement is for “Social Studies” of which Humanities and History are both a component.
