This interests me as my own kid in the class of 2019 is a declared history major. Granted it’s history of science and medicine. She hopes to go to medical school after Yale.
I am glad that history is the top major at Yale. Yale is at its heart a liberal arts school (yeah, yeah, I know it is also a major research institution) and i would be very disappointed if one of the STEM majors jumped to number one. Of course there are many STEM / CS / Pre-med types at Yale but it is a traditionally liberal arts institution. As a psychology major alum with a D who is a Literature major (and loving it), it is good to see that Yale is staying true to its roots.
I have my MA in history so I am thrilled about this trend. My son who laboured through his AP History courses in HS all the while complaining has really enjoyed his first history course at Yale. The study of history is central to any solid holistic education and in developing a well rounded citizen.
I think Yale has a pretty great balance in terms of academic interests - About 30% of students majoring in the Arts & Humanities, 30% in the Social Sciences and 40% in Sciences/Engineering respectively.
If my reading is correct, the paper did not provide an estimate for the % of '19 majoring in history, right? Did I miss anything here?
