Hi, I'm a junior from a very small town and public school in Ohio. The school's total is around 700 students. I'm going to take my SAT's and possibly ACT after my basketball season is over. I realize it will be harder to judge without that information. So, I will give you my current info and info I'm sure of by the time I graduate.

I want to go to the best school I can for majoring in history (American). I'd love to go to Georgetown, because of the great political and historical atmosphere D.C. provides. However, I realize that will be quite a reach, so I'm looking for some straightforward, honest advice on colleges you'd recommend suitable. I really do not want to go in-state; I'm ready to leave Ohio. So colleges from the eastern midwest and east coast are what I'm looking for.

Are you looking for a large, medium, or smaller size school? City or small town? Sre you interested in following big-time sports? You should probably providde such details and more so people will have a better idea of your parameters.

I was hoping to make the decision of school size and location myself given the recommendations of others and how strongly regarded other aspects of the school are

History is one of the very core disciplines in college education. All well-to-do schools will have strong history department, unless you pick a science and engineering-oriented school (such as CMU or GIT, duh). If I could make some suggestions, Johns Hopkins, Emory, and UVa have highly regarded History departments with special emphasis on the US. (In fact, if you goto UVa, you can actually LIVE in one the dorm rooms originally designed by Thomas Jefferson himself! Talk about history.) If you are interested in LACs, I can't see how a "liberal arts" school would not have a good history department, so again, picking out particular schools would be irrelevant.

Private LACs: Kalamazoo, Earlham, Macalester, Lawrence, Gettysburg; Public Us: Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas, UVA, UNC, Rutgers, Minnesota, William & Mary.

HB, I second Kalamazoo (where my son is a freshman now) and the U. of Wisconsin (one of my alma matres). My son is loving his history courses at Kzoo (and the school itself). The faculty is great and because it's a small college the interaction is tremendous. Wisconsin has historically (no pun intended) had one of the finest history departments in the nation. Of course, it's a mega-school, so the feel is entirely different, and you'll have to work your way through large lecture courses with TAs for a while. But Madison is a great place to spend the college years.

Good luck!
