Is THE most boring class ever. Seriously, why should we care what happened in 1571? Why should we care what happened to dead people centuries ago? Isn't the present all about preparing us for the future?

Sure, it would be good to learn SOME history so we don't make the same mistakes, but is History really necessary?

"I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided; and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging the future but by the past."
Patrick Henry

But are you going to need that knowledge in real life? Is someone going to come up to you one day at work and ask you what happened in 1829? (Unless you're a historian and actually enjoy learning about that)

It's important to expand the mind in all areas. Very few of us need calculus or statistics or biology...Think about it...how much of each subject will you ever use? It's important for schools to expose us to as much knowledge as possible to open of as many opportunities as possible when we start to specialize our knowledge in college and then specialize even more for a career.

I dont agree with your opinion. If it weren't for history, there would be no culture and we would all live pointless lives revolved around nothing.

saying this is just like saying if somebody walked up to you and asked
who Virginia Woolfe is
or what the equation for centripetal acceleration in physics is
or how cell division in animal cells occurs.

are you gonna need to know the answer? of course not.

using your logic, nothing learned in school is needed in "real life"

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion... I used to look at it that way, as such a waste of time...now I might want to major in it. Go figure.

History is valuable in every part of life. History is learning about mankind, yourself, and those around you. Everything that is happening around you today has a history and background, and you will never understand why we are at war, or why those two groups are always fighting you, or why you believe in God, etc without learning history. That's what I think.

History is an important part of learning. For a couple of reasons,
(1) its lets us look back into the past and learn how countries and different cultures formed
(2) it teaches us why people from different areas think differently
(3) and as abiter231 said,
["I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided; and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging the future but by the past."

How else will we learn from our mistakes?

We learn history to better ourselves and the future. Think about it, what if there's another Hitler and we don't know what to do? If we learned history we'd know to send peace-keeping troops. History helps us stop wars and past mistakes.

Helps writing

helps critical thinking

Subject that more than all others helps you sound smart

it is useful to know one's past, their "roots", etc

I don't agree that History is completely useless, but I do think that it's overrated. It's so many kids' favorite subjects/major. Think, if that many people liked and went into science or math they could make new discoveries instead of studying past events.
