Hitch-hiking to Harvard?

So, say by some miracle, I get in. There are admitted students days from the 16th of April to the 18th. I don't know about you, but my family don't got dat kinda dough. I find it hard to believe my parents would be willing to fork up the money for travel expenses, especially if i get into more than one school out east.

Would Harvard be willing to generously fund the trip for me? Or would I just be SOL because i'm from far away and not made of money?

If you get full FA, I think they will pay… Where are you?

Indiana. And I don’t think I’m full FA, but it’s still not like we could afford to send me and a parent on a vacation for three days in the middle of a week. lol

If you are not on full FA you can certainly afford to get a bus ticket to H. Once you are there all is free (accomodation, food, activities…) so literally you just need to get to H.

Can’t be more than about 100 bucks for a Greyhound? And your parent does not need to come.

Don’t know your situation, but hope this helps

As Idio recommended, consider a bus ticket, or cheap airfare. Once you arrive in Boston, you can take the redline of the “T” subway to Harvard Square for $1.75 or so. You will walk up the stairs and be directly across the street from Harvard.

For admitted students weekend they encourage you to bring a sleeping bag, as visitors sleep on the floor or futons of hosting undergrads. You will check in at the visiting students hall, drop off your luggage and slp.bag, receive a packet with itinerary, food coupons for the dining hall, and the name of your hosting student and their location, and a schedule of events. You won’t need to spend anything for the weekend, you will be well fed.

You will be so busy you will not really want a parent with you. Events are scheduled from early morning till late at night. Good luck.

I’m not sure what kind of expenses besides airfare/train travel you’re currently expecting, but there is really nothing you need to pay for once you arrive on campus.

Also, the Admitted Student Weekend is not mandatory in any way, so if you feel that the cost is not worth the trip, then by all means make the decision that is the best for your situation. I wasn’t able to visit most of the schools I was admitted to as a high school senior, even the ones I was seriously considering attending, because of cost issues and conflicts with other personal commitments.

If travel expenses will be a serious issue for your family, then it will show through your financial aid documentations, and you will be offered means to request refund/subsidy. In that case, there will be information about it right in your acceptance letter packet. If not, then it probably means that there were students with more need than you who were better qualified for the travel funds, unfortunately.

LOL :), I don’t know what you’re expecting, but Harvard students have to travel from all over the world and I don’t know many who are “made of money”! Indiana is really not that far from Cambridge, considering how far a lot of other people have to travel.

If you’re in NW Indiana, Chicago-MDW to Boston Logan is about 90 bucks each way on Southwest. Once you’re on the ground you can get everywhere you need to go with a Subway/Bus (T) pass for another 10 bucks or so for the duration of your visit.
