Hi.

I applied to City University of Hong Kong in late December, but I am still waiting for their decision. Has anyone applied to CityU and/or knows when they usually make their decisions available? Also, does anyone have any opinions about this university, specifically in the context of international students or their Applied Economics program?

I would really appreciate any insight!

I’m not positive about international applicants, but I know local students receive their admissions decisions usually between February - July. I heard that City U likes to tell international students sooner because they need to prepare to come to a foreign country. Hong Kong universities are quite slow in sending out decisions. I know for HKU, CUHK, and HKUST they usually accept the people with the highest qualifications first, and then accept others later if their top students turn them down. I’d imagine City U is similar. You should be able to check your application status online in the portal you applied for the program in.

As for opinions about City U, I actually love the university. My sister is currently a Psychology major there, and I applied for a few different things. Their Applied Economics major should be quite good because of the university’s location in HK, a major business capital. The university has a number of places to hang out and study, a wide range of books to check out from the library or to buy from their student bookstore, and a number of eating places on campus. My sister has made some really good friends, but she did say that there is a bit of a language barrier often times. The classes aren’t always conducted in the level of English we would expect in the US, and when it is, it’s usually British English which can be confusing. (My teacher once said we were going to “write a test” which apparently means take a test).

Hong Kong is an amazing city. It is super safe and it has a very rich culture. If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me and I’ll try to help as best I can. I wish you luck!
