I am a grade 12 student from Toronto, considering applying HKU this year. I have around 90 average (8 courses) for first report(Nov), 92 average for Mid-term(in Feb), I am getting around 2100 on SAT, 800 SAT Math 2 and 720 SAT Chemistry. I self-studied 4 AP courses (Psychology, Microeconomics, Chemistry, Physics) in Grade 11 and got all 4s. (because my school doesn't offer AP program but I took the most demanding courses at school). I also going to take 4 other AP exams this year (Calculus BC, Macroeconomics, Statistics and U.S History) I scored 108 on TOEFL. I have great extracurriculars including co-op(for business), internships (for both law and business), part-time jobs, volunteers, and lots of clubs. I am an immigrant holding mainland passport. I am wondering how much possibility do I have to get into HKU law or business program?</p>

<p>I too am a Canadian student. Everything you have looks good, I think your chances for business at HKU are higher. But with your stats, you might as well try for U.S universities.
How is your oral English? I think interviews for law are more frequent.</p>

<p>Thank you sooo much for ur reply. My first language is Mandarin, and I can understand Cantonese,too. I got 108 on TOEFL (I will retake it next week, aiming for 110+). I started to do intern/co-op since grade 9. I did co-op in BP (British Petrol) legal department and external affair department in Shanghai. I also worked as an assistant in a Beijing law office. I also worked as a medical assistant in U Mich and got a recomm letter from the professor (though I know it’s not related to my interested field) I also have 350+ volunteer hours in lots of different social events such as Canada Championship. I am a Pres for Accounting Club, Peer Tutoring Committee, Gay Straight Alliance. I am also a founder+Pres for Interschool Volunteer COmmittee which has around 200 members involved. I think my weakest part as an applicant is my academic score because I just came to Canada for 1.5 years.</p>
<p>Plus, I also got some awards from Euclid, COMC, Fermat, etc. I also have some other experiences in music and sports (such as ping pang captain, track&field team, field hockey team, etc). I have two part-time jobs, one is to accompany piano for a choir, the other is to work as a coordinator for a orchestra from U of T. I am considering apply for top 10 univ in U.S (or UCLA/NYU), but it seems the chance to get in is really slight.</p>
<p>I think you are right in the aspect of your academic results. Actually, I think you have a higher chance for a school like Harvard (accepts more students than schools like Princeton because of more class space) because of your great extracurriculars.
I have known people who got in Harvard with 90-or so marks but with wonderful ecs like yours. They are really big on extracurriculars.
HKU is really focused on academics, and stress less importance on ecs. Maybe you could take a break from one or two of these clubs to focus on catching up your marks. </p>
<p>You might also want to explain how you were able to obtain an internship in the states when you live in Canada (U of Mich) as it might come off that you are exagerating. </p>
<p>Anyway, did you work for the external affairs department while you were in Shanghai? (before you came to Canada) Also, your TOEFL score is pretty good already, don’t stress too much.</p>
<p>You are applying as an International student correct? If you study in HK, you degree is less transferable to the western countries if you want to go back. On the other hand, U.S universities are more widely recognized and the conversion process for degrees earned there to qualify to work in Asia is easier than the other way around. If you want to think about your future, you should focus less of HKU and more on U.S, even Canada…</p>
<p>I would def. aim higher and try for U.S or Canada’s U of T or McGill first. Why do you want to HKU? The campus and university quality connects you to less helpful alumni than in U.S top universities. Actually, a business degree in UT, Queens, or Western would be more helpful to you than a bus. degree in HK.</p>

I did the U Mich co-op last summer because I know one of the pro, so I asked if I could work there. I started to work for BP external affairs since I was Grade 9 (before I came here). I might not considering going to any Canadian universities because right now I am living alone and it’s really hard for me. I prefer to go somewhere warmer and has more opportunities like HK,LA,Chicago and NY. I will definitely have top U.S university as first choice but there is only a slight chance to get in. Now I have 8 courses at school, but I feel kinda hard to handle everything now so I am thinking to drop 1 or 2 courses but then my gudiance won’t put “most demanding courses” on my evaluation letter :(</p>

<p>My art teacher’s son went to Western for Ivey (in Canada) and works for AIG in the states now. He was recruited five years ago from them so he’s been doing very well. Also, he did his post-grad studies at Stanford (MBA) so there are many alternate routes. Why not try for U of Beijing as well? Also, what evaluation are you referring to? The one for HKU or U.S universities?</p>
<p>It depends on the university you are applying to, you may have to contact them individually to find out if they will accept midterms. (They most probably will). </p>
<p>For HKU, if you are a perm. resident in a country of Eng instruction, I’m not sure if they will necessarily need to see your TOFEL. Anyway, it’s good that you are taking it anyway.
You will also need to send your scores (both first tries and second tries) to them. So that might affect your application as well. </p>
<p>(it won’t matter if you drop a few courses and don’t have that “demanding courses” comment, the courses you want to apply to are not science-related anyway-assuming you are currently taking the sciences)</p>
<p>From what I know, HKU requirements for mainlanders are higher and HK residents, so be aware of that too. If you want to go to HK, putting business as your first choice would be more helpful in getting your foot in the door.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the course I am dropping are economics and financial securities. I am dropping the courses mainly because of the teacher (I cannot do well in his weird way). The problem I am concerned is that gudiance won’t give me the “most demanding courses” comment on the teacher’s recommendation letter which is way more important than my average, but if I don’t drop, I cannot keep it over 90:(</p>
<p>I would also omit the Gay Straight Alliance club on your list of ecs, I’m not sure how HK people are going to take that…:I</p>

<p>-hmmm, I don’t suggest you drop both, either drop one or the other, dropping both is not a good idea in grade 12. I’m sure you’ll do fine, given the fact that you have until feb. to pull your mark up. high 80s (88,89,90) is alright given your spectacular ecs, I KNOW there will be an exception made for you.</p>
<p>I myself am I 90s student, but I have one or two courses that are seriously pulling me down (84, 82) but you have lots of time to pull it up. Leave yourself with more options, don’t limit it to only six.</p>
