HKU HKUST Study Abroad Engineering

Hey, I know this subject has been visited a couple of times and I have read through the posts but they still didn't really answer my questions. I am planning on studying abroad in Hong Kong next spring. I am studying Mechanical Engineering at Illinois, and my choices are University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. If I could ask for some opinions on:
-The academics (which one is tougher, are classes better at one school or the other, engineering better at one school or the other, ect.)
-Location (Does HKU have a big advantage by being actually in the city area/HKUST's distance from the city)
-Social Scene(any advantages/disadvantages)
-Housing(any better one way or the other/how does it turn out for a study abroad student)
-any other comments

Thanks!

Hi, I am a Hong Konger living in the US! Although I did not finish high school nor apply for universities in HK but I could tell you that, in Hong Kong, HKU has higher prestige than HKUST overall. People in HK tend to have favor in HKU because it’s considered as the #1 university in HK (and even Asia? I’m not sure about this one.) BUT both schools are really good. I heard the engineering department of HKUST is pretty good though. Idk if this would help you or you may think this is just a bunch of pointless crap lol but this is all I know… Good luck! Hong Kong is awesome:)

-The academics (which one is tougher, are classes better at one school or the other, engineering better at one school or the other, ect.)

Among the subjects both universities cover, i.e. science, engineering and business, HKUST has better reputation across the board outside of Hong Kong, mainly because of their superior research reputation. Within Hong Kong, however, HKU usually enjoys more prestige because of its history (HKU is 100 years old while HKUST is 20 years old).

In your particular area, ME, HKUST is better without any question.

-Location (Does HKU have a big advantage by being actually in the city area/HKUST’s distance from the city)

It will take you about 20 minutes to get from HKU to Central (minibus), and about 40 minutes from HKUST to TST (minibus + subway).

-Social Scene(any advantages/disadvantages)

HKU is more relaxed, with more liberal arts flavor. HKUST is more of a tech school environment.

-Housing(any better one way or the other/how does it turn out for a study abroad student)

Minutes from the seashore, HKUST dorms probably offer the most breath taking view anyone can imagine. Nearby apartments/houses all cost multi-million dollars (US$) , typically with inferior views.

-any other comments

HKU is the “British university” in HK, while HKUST is the “American school”.
