HKU or AUC?

Hi

I am a Norwegian student, currently in my last year of Upper Secondary School. This fall, I will enroll as an international undergraduate student in a foreign university. I have received an offer of admission from the University of Hong Kong (HKU), as well as an offer from Amsterdam University College (AUC), which is a small selective Honours college, established and “co-owned” by Amsterdam University and VU Amsterdam University. Basically, I will study the humanities in both (although AUC is more interdisciplinary; “international liberal arts and sciences bachelor programme that crosses the boundaries of languages, cultures and academic disciplines” according to their site).

I have more or less decided to go to HKU, as I have been really certain of that for nearly a year now, however, AUC seems like such a great opportunity as well, which makes it hard to make a final decision.

I am working on a pro/con list, but what the 2 unis offer in most matters are so different, it makes it hard even to compare them. In short, AUC is the best way to “play it safe”, regarding academic and economical issues, as well as future prospects. HKU, on the other hand, is on the other side of the globe! (And a great university as well)

I hope some of you can contribute with some input? Do you get any immediate thoughts when you read this, like “definitively HKU!” or vice versa… ? What would you do?

Thanks!

Both are completely different cities, in completely different settings, with completely different flair.

Where do you want to live?

Hong Kong. I think it would be more exciting to live there than in Amsterdam. But as you say, they are completely different citys, and living in Amsterdam wouldn’t exactly be bad either!

Hey AlecDluz,

it seems like you’ve already made your choice, but if you have any questions regarding AUC and/or Amsterdam, I’d be happy to answer them!

(current AUC student)

I will, I PM’ed you:) Thanks!

Hey dora,

I’m invited to study at AUC, but I am not sure whether this program is suitable for me…
Could you give me a short statement about your life at AUC? Do you like the housing on campus? And how is the level of work and the support from the lecturers? Do you think it is worth the (comparatively high) fees?
Thanks a lot for your response, I feel just so badly prepared and informed for such a decicion…
Best regards, thomson

@thomson - Yeah it’s hard to get good information about AUC, their website presents a rather idealised picture of the school! You should definetively contact an AUC student. Good luck with your decision:)

I chose HKU over AUC btw

I’ve been looking for someone who studied at AUC!!! I hope you get this and can reply to me. I’m almost done with the application process for AUC (waiting on a few recommendations) for admission this coming semester. How do you like AUC? How are the classes? I’m applying for the biomedical sciences program, do you know how those classes are? I’m so excited about studying at AUC, hope I love it like I think I will (and that I get in!). Is it a good atmosphere? Everybody keeps warning me how hard it will be! Any info you can give me will be so appreciated!!
