HKU or HKUST

the online system’s now open! though it says mine is still being considered… by mid of april everything should come out so good luck everyone.

2mm
I checed the online system and it says the same thing, I felt better after reading your post. Hopefully the decision will be out soon.

capitalist ** here goes** well I am actually from nassau, bahamas and youre right it is expensive.
I cant wait for these universities to make their decisions and then we can move on to more important issues like, which rez we stay at.

Hey,
Has anyone gotten a notification for interview?
This is my FIRST time to have an interview …
And I am extremely nervous!!!
Has anyone gone through interview?
Can I ask those who have what topics the professors would ask me?
NEED your help!!!
Itz on next week!!

(I applied for Engineering)

@rubichino: Congrats. Yours is a face-to-face or telephone interview?

@Donutz: Thx dude, but itz nothing to congrad… I dun think i stand a chance anyways. My gpa and sat are pretty average… They may interview me perfunctorily for everybody… I even got a conditional offer from HKUST… What is worse, im an ESL student, and do not speak fluently -_-…

Do you guyz think they expect me to have a very good english and fluency??? T^T

(again, engineering)

rubichio, a conditional offer is good :). By the way, what are your gpa and sat scores? I am just curious.

Hey long time no post here, I just received my offer from HKUST yesterday, applied in December for the Dual Degree program. My offer is very scary, its 40 points in IB but with full scholarship… Given the current economy, the amount of money I can save, my failure at my top US schools and the opportunities that the program can provide me, I think I will go there. But yea 40 points is very hard to achieve so I will have to wait for US universities still and probably deposit at one where I was accepted.

So what I will do is probably go to HKUST for undergrad for 4 years and then go to my first choice US university for grad school.

Also @Capitalist and everyone else, do you know much about the Dual Degree? How is it viewed in Hong Kong?

Thanks

long time no post for me too!
I also got into HKUST, but with a different offer.
I need to get a 33 total, and 4 in all my subjects…which I’m sure I’ll be able to pull off.
they also gave me a scholarship but it depends on my final point for IB.

ysbera, in HK the undergrad is actually 3 years =]

right now, I’m not so sure if HKUST is my first choice (it used to be.)
I went to HK for the interview, and HK was so small but crowded in my opinion.
It’s a great city, don’t get me wrong, but I’m not so sure if I want to live somewhere that small! and the campus was pretty much in the middle of nowhere but then again, since HK is so small it only took 30 min to get to downtown. And my impression of HKUST wasn’t very diverse…I looked around the campus before my interview and everyone was talking in cantonese and I didn’t really see a lot of international kids there =/

Ahh, deciding where to go for college is SO hard! I also got good offers from unis in the US and I’m considering two of them atm. I got into Indiana University with scholarship for four years, direct admit to their Business school and into their honors program. so that’s looking pretty good for me. And I also got into USC and I love LA – the weather and everything.

As for HKU, I got rejected from my first choice curriculum which was BBA (law) haha. But apparently I’m still considered for my other choices but I havent heard back from them yet regarding interview or whatever…

Any advice for me regarding where to go next year? =(

@SDG1: my accum gpa is 3.52 and single sat 1890. I could not put much emphasis on my school work because my original plan was to go back to my country and focus on entrance exam… since universities in my country do not really care about how you do at school. (GPA takes only 5% of overall admission criteria)
But when I became senior, I wanted to go abroad also, so I got GPA of my senior 1st year 3.99 / 4.25 with 3 ap courses… HAha So I am still not sure where to go for university…

@Merrypips: Are you serious? HKUST is not diverse at all? I really expect to see some English-speaking environment…

@rubichino: well from what I’ve seen, there wasn’t much diversity at all. I hear that there are many exchange students but that’s only a portion of the whole school…well for me I thought it would be really diverse because everything was taught in english, but I think the classes are in english, but most of the students are local HK-ers

I thought it was common sense that HKUST isn’t that diverse. In fact no university in Hong Kong is that diverse. Most of the students are from Hong Kong and their native language is catonese, of course they will speak their native language among their friends, even though they can speak English. Also, every course will be in English which is good.

However, if you want good job prospects and want to befriend some locals, then you have to learn catonese, but you only need to speak it. If you get accepted, then just use your whole summer break to learn catonese. If you don’t then you will only befriend exchange students and other international students and some few locals.

Also, I’m planning to apply to HKU for actural science, HKUST for statistics, and the same for CUHK. However, that will be next year.

I think schools in HK only give out conditional offers right?

I have an interview for Global Business at HKUST tmr! eep!

how do i check my application status for hku? i applied for dentistry and was in hk for an interview last week. cant wait to know abt the outcome. seems to me that the application status enquiry thing is not open yet…hmm.

@flashing.light: Hey! I was also in Hong Kong last week for an interview at PPDH for the BDS admission at HKU, and the secretary told me that the outcome will be posted online around Mid April. I’m assuming you’re also a non jupas applicant? how did your interview go?

Hi guys,
I just finished my phone interview with HKU
2 Professors were interviewing me at the same time.
Unlike what i expected, the phone- interview was rather chill.
They were not negative nor bombastic(?) at all…
and the interview lasted only 5? or 7 minutes. It was extremely short !
For those who may be interested in preparing for interview,
I will list down some of my questions.

 1. Introduce yourself? (Easy start~)

) You live in ____. Is there any reason why you are currently staying there?
*) Living alone? or with your family?
*) Studying in Hongkong means you have to be apart from your family. Do you have any experience of living alone?
( questions are for those who are currently studying in another school)

2) Why did you choose to study in HK? (typical…)
3) Any preferences in HKU? Any reasons for applying HKU? (Typical…)
4) Why this major? specifically? (typical… mine was engineering)
5) planning to earn master degree or start working after grad?
6) Have you applied any other schools in HK? (causing dilemma… ‘Should I be honest? or flattering?’ I chose to be honest, and said i got a conditional offer from HKUST…)
6-1) What is conditional offer like?

and that was the end of the interview…
I recommend you to prepare for general questions… And you will be fine… (at least for engineering) They certainly did not ask about any technical questions -_- haha… that will be very scary…
I asked when I can hear the decision, but I barely understood them because of bad signal, and their Chinese accent. Anyways, hope this can help some of people here.!! Gluck!

@2mm: yup, i’m also a non-jupas applicant. the interview went pretty smoothly. haha thanks so much for that piece of info. have u managed to check ur application status online? how was ur interview? i’m really anxious to know about the outcome!!when was urs anyway? mine was on the morning of the 25th.

@ysbera: I always think that HK Universities give out really scary offers for top courses- ie. 40 points for IB, that is equivalent to the offer of Oxbridge. (But I guess its okay, cos they always reserve a proportion for the top 2% of HK Students - so I guess it is fair) Just out of curiosity, which program did you applied for, and is the scholarship for all 3/4 years? Oh by the way, I would definitely go to Chicago instead of Washington - I had a friend with full 8 year scholarship at a St Louis Uni who wanted to transfer to WashU, but she just DIDN’T like the type of people who goes there - and neither did I (before I got waitlisted - -") Did you get enough aid from Wustl?

@merrypips: If you are comparing HK Universities to that of US, it may appear that it is less diverse- because there will not be White, Black, Asian Americans, Natives etc (although all of these categories are still under ‘American’ on paper). I would say 10% of international students in an American University would be considered quite diverse. In Hong Kong for most universities, it is more than that - it is just that the majority of the remaining percentage is composed of Hong Kong students.

BBA (Law) is extremely competitive, and the average HKCE grade is about 27 points (out of 30), and this is probably the top 10% of the HK students. (and rmb, they ARE CHINESE - lol)

@SDG1: Only conditional offers are made since admission is based on final examination results

@rubichino: That is very nice of you to share that piece of info - even though I didn’t have any phone interviews - haha. It doesn’t sound like anything so hard though - my physical interview was much more intimidating.

@All: In my opinion, HKU is still more respected than HKUST and I very much like HKU more because it is right in the city  - I went to HKUST one summer, but I felt that the caliber of student wasn’t as high as that of HKU. HKU is recognised as one of the top 5 universities in Asia - probably 1st/2nd among these 4 - with Beijing, National Singapore and Tokyo University.

One crucial factor in deciding for college is where you might want to work in the future - if you intend to work in China - studying in Hong Kong will serve as a springboard into starting to understand how this region of Asia works - and getting a job too (HKU & HKUST have lots of great connection, though I am not too sure of HKUST in the following years since the principal is going this year). I’ve heard from the faculty that many foreign students enroll for intensive Mandarin courses in China before attending their Universities in Hong Kong - and eventually they pick up some Cantonese too - so that is definitely beneficial too.

I hope this long post will be helpful to some :)

@michelleger: I can’t believe I have forgotten to continue our conversation - haha - I wasn’t too happy when Penn denied me so I guess I lost my mind for a moment. HKU’s IBGM is my top choice now and I would honestly love to know that I got in - and so that I can meet you personally. You def. going to Hong Kong?

@thegrand: i am nearly positive i will be attending hong kong u, i just have to meet the req’s they gave me, which are completely reasonable but still make me a little nervous! (especially with the student visa, not sure if i can apply til my req’s are met…but ill find out soon, plan on emailing/calling sum1) im sorry you didnt get into Penn, great school, actually one of my very close friend’s father is a dentistry professor there. cross your fingers for IBGM then =) it’d be cool if everybody on this thread who ends up going to HKU or UST meets up when we get there =P i would def like to meet at least a few! =D

@everyone- a late correction to my previous post that listed all my EC’s, on my application, when i checked, i realized i only included my EC’s that had to do with track and cross country, very little of anything else. everything else i omitted for some reason(to keep it to one page i think) and dont be discouraged if you did not list many ECs or even send in a paper, i dont think they put much weight on it anyway. i just sent in the summary of EC;s because i thought anything worth upping my chances at acceptance was worth it, although i may have come off as pompous…hope not! =P
