HKU or HKUST

@fridayevening: what program did you apply for hku? Generally, hku is more selective, but don’t get me wrong; I am not saying that its better.

Thx for ur information! yea, so I think i’ll be going to ust…
Btw, am i the only wondering why i have to do the visa this early even though im still on conditional offer?
I told other friends and they said visa is pretty big thing…
If I am still not sure if i’ll get enough AP scores or not, i dun see the point of doing visa early like this…

@SDG1 BBA as well. but i am not brooding over it. i was ecstatic when i received hkust offer. =)

anyway my local newspaper just reported this. hong kong universities banged the top 4 slots by Times Higher Education for the asian universities ranking. hku first, cuhk second, with hkust coming in fourth after university of tokyo. this should clear any doubts for those who are still hesitant about coming to hong kong! =)

[NUS, NTU in top 14](http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_375684.html)

@rubichino- well the visa can take up to 2 months to process, and depending on where you live, up to a week or more in the post. and i know what you mean about the conditional offer thing, but for HKU, they can forward all your visa materials thru their CEDARS program to the chinese embassy or where ever. and then when your label is ready they will pick it up and mail it to you once your acceptance is officially confirmed, i think UST probably has something like this as well. the whole visa app is pretty annoying, although if worst comes to worst i think you can start at UST without one since traveler’s visa lasts a while…

Wow, took me a while to catch up. :P

Merrypips: Literally 100% of staff and at least 99% of the kids at my school use macs, so i’m sure using a mac in Hong Kong won’t be a problem. But your right, gamers hate macs, because most games don’t work on it. But then again, macs are immune to viruses so… hm.

About changing majors: I went to an information session once at HKU, and they said once your in, it’s pretty easy to change majors, as long as your not taking medicine.

About life at UST: Yeah, I’m pretty worried about the whole non-canto-speaking thing too, but I’ve gotten along fine only speaking English in Hong Kong for more than 10 years so I’m sure it’ll be fine. And life at uni is what you make of it! (Cheesy, but it’s true :D) Trust me, you can’t live in Hong Kong and not party. As someone mentioned earlier, nightlife in Hong Kong is pretty damn good, albeit the fact that Hong Kong is a tiny island, and thus your average club/bar is the size of your living room.

About LSE: ahahahahahahahah that was some tense argument back there! I admit, LSE is a great school. But so are HKU and UST. All of them also have their flaws. E.g. LSE and HKU have crappy campuses: LSE doesn’t really have a campus, and HKU is kinda cramped (in my opinion). But then again, it’s all a matter of what YOU like. If you like the fact that your school is literally built into the city, then great. If not, then you really should be looking somewhere else. More internationals favour LSE than actual UK citizens do, and a lot of them apply soley because it is “known.” And because they receive so many applicants each this, they’re able to set their standards very very high. Take Cambridge and Oxford for example. Today, they’re household names. But only 30 years ago, Oxbridge, Durham and other UK unis equivalent to the Ivy league schools weren’t known at all. They were just another university until more and more people ended up continuing their education at various institutes of higher education. Increasing their IB/A Level requirements is just another form of marketing. People associate tough requirements with academic superiority, and start viewing that school as above others.

… okay, rant over. Sorry about that.

How are all your exams going??? I hope all of you get your 40s… or I’ll be all alone come September. :c
I’m still doing lame school work i.e. Maths portfolio and Psych/Bio coursework… bo-ring.

@spillcanvas- about the major change thing, really? =D that makes me a little relieved, im having cold feet about the science field, and wondering if i shoud have chosen business, i just dont know what i want because i want everything. =P maybe theyll let me double major or something(tho that would be HARD, no?) i wonder if you know whether they mean major changes are allowed like just in the dept you are accepted to or could it be like from science department to business?

hey michelle check if you can transfer into the dual degree program…that is perfect for people wanting to do dual majors in engg and business!

Even though I am going to hku, I don’t think the ranking is too accurate.
U Tokyo should be 1st…

HKU maybe 2nd or 3rd.

When are you guys going to hk? Late August maybe?

@michelleger: if you are trying to do science + business, that’s probably a dual degree. I dunno if you can do that.

Alternatively, you can always do a minor. :)

Do you think the physics boundary is going to change from 70% because of the revised syllabus?

@fridayevening: hey, I know exactly how you feel! HKUST was my first choice in HK, and then I got rejected from HKU…which didn’t exactly made me feel so good, but I got over it and now I’m excited for HKUST!! =D

I only have 6 more papers to go! mine ends on the 21st…which is the very last day of IB exams for people at my school haha. Hopefully, I’ll get what I need to maintain my conditional offer :P

Haha, I think it will go up by a bit- perhaps 73-74?, Paper 2 was a bit ‘different’, there were still bits in P3 that I cannot do though.

Hm I hope it won’t be too high. I usually cannot predict how I did for physics.

Anyway… Stats for me tmr…
Hope that’ll be a good paper for me.

Is it only me who pay deposits to both ust and hku?
I already had a firm decision to ust for engineering, but today’s newspaper headline about HKU being the top school in asia makes my dad change his mind again…
Gosh!!

Well, HKUST is ranked 4th overall anyway so its still very good, and in terms of engineering, it does seem to have a higher rating than HKU. Again, its you who is going to be the one studying, not your father!

thanks everyone for suggestions! i think a minor is a good idea, lol, actually thats what i wanted to do and then i totally forgot it was an option.

and sweet, HKU is number one! well at least for well-rounded-ness. the actual department rankings though are on the whole, much lower(er at least for my dept.). sometimes i wonder if theres any corruption to those rankings though…like payment =P but i doubt it

and to whoever asked everyone when were gonna be in HK, sorry i forget who, im planning to be there mid august-ish, like 15th-20th since i think some hall orientations start on the 21st and plus you have to get your dorm set up and stuff…

BTW for physics P2, did you do B2? Wasn’t the first part of B2 thermodynamics and the last part fossil fuels?

Wow, michelleger, you seemed so inform about all this. I don’t even have a clue when is the orientation, or if I even have one - haha. I’m still parading through my IB exams.

I did B2 + B4, and yup B2 is just as you described it.
