erm, the visa app isnt long per se…its just annoying, i always put it off =P but you do have to include copies of things like admission offer, passport, and fill in another form if you want CEDARS to sponsor it. i suppose you could wait longer, technically i think the deadline is 4 months before school starts(but i wouldnt wait THAT long)

Oh i see. It says that you have to show documents that you can finance yourself in HK… I am really confused about that part. B/c I don’t have a bank account or anything like that.

anyway i was wondering, is it a must for international students to live in the campus halls? I don’t really have an intention to stay in one because i am going to live in my dad’s flat.

LOL
You guys are getting ** really ** excited…

@SDG1: Yea, I think HKUST will still be better for engineering. and the list of ppl here shows all the engineers are on the side of ust!
HKU:
TheGrand - BBA(IBGM)
michelleger - BSc
SDG1 - BBA Econ/Fin
kawaiigurl- BBA Econ/Fin

HKUST:
ysbera - BEng & BBA(Technology and Management)
merrypips - BBA
spillcanvas - BBA(Global Business)
Donutz - BBA
rubichino - BEng (Mechanical Engineering)
phoenix_ice - BEng (Chemical & Environmental Engineering)
dqbonafide - BEng (Electronic)

@fridayevening: Hm, I never thought about living outside the campus… You should contact the school…

Hey guys, if get two 4’s on my ap physics and calculus in July, am i still eligible for entrance scholarship? (HKUST)

I don’t think you need to stay in the dorms if you don’t want to. In fact right now I don’t really want to haha public toilets, common room basically doesn’t have anything, tiny rooms. Don’t have a place to play Xbox probably. Not what I imagined for a school that has a beach. But for 1500 hk its probably the cheapest housing I can get

There is NO WAY you can get anything better with HKD 1500. Housing is in fact supposedly THE MOST expensive thing - relative to all the other stuff. So, be satisfied, and it wasn’t too bad - I’ve stayed there (UST) for a month and survived lol.

True and the worst thing I could probably do is build a tent on the beach and go sleep there. Do you know where people socialize? Common room, restaurants, dorms?

Also are you taking CS or Chemistry?

hahahahaha,
I may build a tent with ya!

sdg1, hah! that confused me too, but the visa is set up like that because i think it more is focused on postgrads or something… What you can do is get a copy of your parent’s bank documents like whatever they have in their accounts. My dad doesnt get any official docs in the mail since he does it all online so he printed something out and it looks so crappy, like i couldve made it myself on word! lol, so I wrote a note for him saying he was financing my studies and im gonna have him sign it.

and also i am positive that is allowed since i contacted cedars about it.

well UST’s visa application seems rather simpler. The university assisted us on what to send & they even typed in all the estimated expenses within the form.

@rubicinho : Prove of accommodation only if you are under 18.

^HKU did this as well, in admissions packet theres a packet called “Important Notes for International Students”. i just found it actually, i knew i had read something earlier with expense info, lol! and it has estimated expenses and a list of everything needed to send in with student visa if you want it sponsored by CEDARS.
SDG1 maybe you have one? it should be with the admissions packet. makes things much easier =D

Visa apps being filled out… Is the visa app filled out online with documents mailed in or sent through email via pdf? I don’t understand how you are supposed to prove financial ability to remain in HK… I feel like I email HKUST so much they might revoke my admissions offer…

@michelleger - thanks for your reply :). $10,000 a year seems a lot to my family since we’re in a financial hole at the moment. So that’s why I did email the dept. Waiting on a response!

omg how exciting to think about going ! :)

Hello everyone…well, i m new in tis forum…
i m a malaysian, n i had make a decision to accept bba (econ/finance) from HKUST…
i also got an offer from HKU for bachelor of science econ & finance…but i m more interested towards business, hope tat i have made the right decision

@michelleger: Yeah, thanks. I did receive the important notes. And since I dont have bank statement, I think I have to ask my parent to write me a letter saying that they are going to finance me, along w/ the bank statement, right?

@QuincyKid: Its funny how international students view UST more highly than local ppl. My understanding is that hk ppl view HKU> CUHK > UST. That’s kind of why I chose HKU, and also b/c my family also pressured me to choose HKU + I personally like HKU better But then again, you’re not hk person so you don’t need to care about what we think.

You got an offer from HKU for bsc? or econ/fin? I have nothing against UST but I just think that bba in UST is kinda huge. But if you’re a quiet guy, I think UST is perfect fit for you.

SDG1 : i got an offer for bsc…is tat any different with econ/fin?..actually, i do prefer HKU but the fact tat they offer me different courses make me chose UST over HKU…cox everyone seems to have a say tat UST will b a better choice if u consider to study business…i m not a quiet guy, though…y do u said tat ust suit quiet ppl, is it bcox of their co-k activities is lesser??

Quincy, I’ll appreciate if you typed full English words, my eyes hurt while reading your messages. To be honest, I’d say for undergraduate, the courses for business at both schools are equally good. It’s up to the other factors I guess.

But if its an entirely different course, you’ll be better off doing research on the individual courses itself.

@phoenix_ice i totally get what u meant by emailing them too much. i emailed them a number of times, asking to clarifying the financial matters, i could sense their impatience in their replies.

which bring me to what i want to ask fellow ust students about. did you guys get any reply from ust that they have receive ur visa documents? i asked them to confirm with me when they received my documents which they have yet to done so. i am getting pretty paranoid about my documents losing their way somewhere and today is the deadline. hahaha.

I mailed my visa application via EMS on Saturday and I got an email from UST today that they got my visa application =] I think they usually email you once they receive any important document that you send to them? at least that’s what happens to me…
