I’ve given Computer Engineering,Environmental Engineering and Electronic Engineering as my options in the same order…being an Indian sciency, theres no other go,right…lol…these courses are good in HKUST,right?:)

Lol,I dont mean the number of Indians on this thread,I meant in HKUST…:D…are there a decent number?lol

Hmmm. Env. Engg? Hehe. Odd one out among your three choices. Looks like you like it
All engg courses at HKUST are good. But I think Mechanical’s their best one among all. It’s research output is among the best in the world.

Oh yeah. There are a decent number of Indians there. You’ll find non-chinky people there don’t worry! Hehe.

Grr. Sorry I mixed it all up. THE-QS publishes world rankings. And US News publishes rankings of American colleges. And both are reliable. :)

Anand: Yes they do send a conformation once they receive the money, normally both electronically and physically…

smartchap: If you have a good SAT score then definitely send those cause it’ll only hamper your chance of getting in, wont harm you at all ! The swire scholarship is really good but really Hard to get! If you have really good marks then def apply for it, but if not then dont risk it man… My oarents just visited HKUST and told me they saw a lot of Indians and International students… But dude the entire point about studying abroad is to get exposure and diversity and stay outside your comfort zone, so its better if you dont isolate yourself by only hanging out with Indians all the time and try and get to know people from everywhere… atleast thats what I think…
The courses you have mentioned certainly are great and HKUST has a dcent reputation for teaching these disciplines, not really sure about environmental engineering though… But all these courses are very different from eachother, which one are you interested in ??

System Failure: US news is the best ranking system acc to me as well… Environmental Engineering is probably the best thing to do keeping in mind the growing demand of alternate sources of energy and global awareness !! And I love Environmental Sciences and Socities …!! and chinky mat bol kuch log bahaut jaldi offend ho jate hain and they get all touchy and stuff…
And one of the chinese University has also started a ranking which has gained a LOT of popularity very quickly cause supposedly it is the most unbiased ranking system till now… I think the jaiotong Uni or the Tsinghua uni is doing it… i’ll let u knw whn i remember correctly…

^Yeah, Shanghai Jiaotong University rankings. Something like that. I know about 'em.
Hai sachchi mein? Why would they get offended? Chinky itna mast word hai. And some of my friends call me chinky because I’m . Very little though. :P

@ smartchap: I too am an Indian and applied for undergrad. I live in Kolkata…My school is ISC board.
Where do u stay in India? I applied on 24th December and got an interview call on 4th Feb… So i think if u apply now u can expect to get an interview call around second week of April or so…or before…I dont hv idea about that…

As far as i know 4 Indians have applied for undergrad course excluding the ones in the thread.
Have u already applied or u are goin to apply…??

I had asked for change of my course and u guys suggested me to call them or email them.
I had emailed them and I got the following reply from them.

You may change your program choices, however there is no such a need as we will consider which of the three choices will be most suitable for you and the interview score you obtained for your phone interview will be applied to all three choices.
Students admitted into the BBA program will take common business foundation courses in Year 1 (which will be your second year at HKUST as you will study 4 years in HKUST). After completion of Year 1, students will declare major into one of the following BBA programs: Professional Accounting, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, Operations Management, Marketing, Management of Organizations. Interested students may also apply for a 2nd major from the above disciplines. For your reference, in the 2008-09 academic year, over 90% of all BBA students successfully get into their 1st or 2nd program choice.

So I am quite happy that i dont have to change my course pref as i can be considered for any of them. I have given my interview very well and hope to get in .

@sarthak -thanks for the info…
And yh i agree…environmental engineering has the most scope for the future…I actually wanted to apply for that but i thought that the course is a bit to narrow and didnt want to restrict my options in the under grad level itself…
Therefore i chose chem eng in all my unis…If I go UST i will surely get the chance to change in the second or third year…
Yh environmental engineering will be a huge hit in a few years time…comparable to comp eng in the last decade…

I agree env engineering will be huge later on. And chem eng is argued to be the toughest, in general, because of the wide scope of knowledge you need. x_x

@anad - What’s your bro’s major?? USC is a pretty darn good school. Been there myself, but it’s expensive to go there, since it’s a private institution…

@amanagarwal - Wow they give you an interview score? That’s kind of nerve-racking. Thanks for the info!

@phoenix_ice - No they did not give me any interview scores.I think that after they take interviews of different candidates they analyse the entire interview on terms of the course applied for[all the 3 preferences] and then grade the students in terms of interview scores[which I GUESS they keep to themselves and is not disclosed b4 the candidates]

On the basis of the interview scores and your critical analysis of the interview questions they choose which course shall be good for you. Then is when they offer you.
[CORRECT ME IF I AM MISTAKEN,I MAY BE WRONG TOO]

Hey ppl !
Okay the interviews of both HKU and HKUST went well i guess. HKUST was more interested in my future plans and my passion for them and HKU wanted to know whether ill even come it they would offer me an admission.
Anyhow fingers crossed.
Recently ive been wondering which uni is better HKU or HKUST ?
From the maps and virtual tours that ive seen, I think HKUST is good in education (Electronic engineering) but it does not have alot of facilities like just one swimming pool, three residential hallls and just one outdoor football pitch. Whereas the campus of HKU is really impressive !
Any comments ppl ?

@phoenix-He is doing a masters in materials engineering…Awesome place,been there myself…
IS chem really the hardest??.. dear me…i must change my options then…
I hear electrical is very hard considering the insane amount of maths involved…

@dexmax-its a known fact that HKU is overall a better Uni than UST in terms of facilities and overall student life…
yh but for engineering UST is better ever so slightly!!!

System Failure: yeah matlab they are a bit touchy about aise comments kyinki hum saare foreigners unko bahaut copy karte hain! but waise they r nice people to kuch nahi kahenge :)

Anand: Fair enough! You made the right choice! I took Mech Eng too because I didnt wanna narrow down my options as yet…

Smartchap: okie. I did JAVA in 10th too and liked it and got 98, but I cant see myself taking up a job programming stuff u knw… Besides programming isnt really my thing.

Anand: UST is definitely better thn HKU! And this topic is not open so debate !! :P

@Dexmax: I think you mean the other way round. HKUST campus is very impressive. It has got seven residential halls and what not. HKU being an older university has a less impressive campus as compared to HKUST. But education wise, both are good :)

@Anand: Hehe. No. ChemE and CivilE are on the easier side.

@system failure:-you are sadly mistaken…I wish it were true though…:)…Checked out various forums and this is the opinion…

(most difficult at top)
Chemical/BioChemical
Electrical/Computer
Mechanical/Industrial
Civil/Environmental

My teachers (the engineer ones) were of the opinion that Electrical is the hardest and civil/structural the easiest…
Like others said, I think it also comes down to what interests you as well. If you’re slogging through hours of work that seems boring to you, it’s going to be hard no matter what.(I copied this btw)
End of the day no engineering degree is easy!!!

Hey guyz jst received the good news 2day that i have been accepted at HKUST fall 2010 for BBA 120 CREDIT POINTS(5710). THEY HAVE SET A CONDITION FOR ACCEPTANCE:

OVERALL 80% OR ABOVE IN ISC
80% OR ABOVE IN MATHS.

I SHALL RECEIVE FULL SCHOLARSHIP IF I GET 90% OR AVOVE
AND 50% SCHOLARSHIP IF I GET 85% OR ABOVE

I’m too excited. Unbelievable. I received the conditional letter within a week.

@anand -Yes 120 credits is for 4 years.Since we belong to the INDIAN EDUCATION BACKGROUND we are required to do a FOUNDATION YEAR before we can start of with the actual course.

@smartchap - I am not well knowledged with what credit points really are but I have come across sentences involving course credit points in various university sites.I think they measure a course in terms of credit points and u need to score that amount of credit points throughout the course to pass it.
This simply means that I need to score 120 cr points to attain the BBA degree.

As 5701 is concerned …it is the course number.
