aman: Great news man!!! Congrats ! looks like another Indian might be joining HKUST besides me :)

Dexmax: The HKUST campus is like a hotel resort! Its away on the sea side and surrounded by mountains and has ALL facilities on campus, even Mc Donalds !!
As I have said before in this thread, my parents saw the campus and were astounded and astonished!!

@Aman -oh thanks for the Info and Congrats againā¦:)ā¦ foundation year is a bit harshā¦Is it just for BBA??
Isnt Indian education meant to be much superior to other countriesā¦

@sarthak: I know 3 more Indians with the same conditional letter I got. So I hope to see a good amount of Indians in HKUST.

@anand: Its not for BBA. Its for every undergrad Indian student. Ya Indian education is comparatively much superior but people here dont have any practical knowledge.

Can i do part time jobs in campus and wats the hourly income?? Any idea.

guys,Iāve got so many doubts regarding the formā¦bear with meā¦lol

1)Theyāve asked to list the school names in the Secondary Edu tabā¦but, from which year??they have options like from kindergardenā¦and then form 1,2,3ā¦,etcā¦lolā¦

2)And the post sec tab,Iāll leave everything empty, right??

have many moreā¦lolā¦will ask them later;)

@smartchap: Even i faced the same problem while filling up the form.In my form I filled in all my educational background since class 1 to 12.I thought i filled it wrong and then I called them up. They said that it does not mater if u fill the educational information wrongly in the form. As they do check the supporting documents.

aman and Anand: Indian education is absolutely one of the best ones and very rigorous, but it focuses more on marks than on personality development and knowledge application through practical experienceā¦ well tht cnt be said to be the wrong thing cause India is making progress no doubt! But the Indian system is definitely not the most superior system! If you talk only in sense of difficulty and how rigorous it is, then the Korean, Japanese and Chinese education systems are pretty much similar if not harderā¦

I donāt know about you guys, but I absolutely love checking this forum (even if I canāt keep up). I think I read on this forum, a year ago, an analogy for the reputation/rigor of HKU vs. HKUST. HKUST was like the MIT of asia and HKU was like the Harvard of asiaāUST having a more rigorous curriculum than HKU and HKU having a bitter reputation with a difficult workload but still comparably lighter than HKUST. It depends on your preference of course! I chose to apply to UST primarily because of the environment, academics, and what I hear about the vibrant extracurrics. xD It also seems to be on the fast track for success, seeing that itās only been nearly two decades since it opened.

@aman - CONGRATS!!! Thatās a pretty amazing offer!

@smartchap:In secondary fill Ur educational background from class 5-10 and in post secondary fill 11-12.

Thats what i did. I might be wrong but i dint face any problem in my application procedure. The application was very smooth but u have to send ur supporting documents from class 9-12 only.

The admission professors are very friendly. Be sure to fill the necessary fields correctly and the SOP plagiarism free.

@ phoenix_ice: Thanks man. Iām too excited. I have my boards in a month. Hope i do well and get 90% so that i can get full scholarship.
Have u been admitted to the university or waiting a reply for interview or conditional letter.

@sarthak: Did u get a conditional letter or unconditional letter??

phoenix_ice: Same here hence the huge number of posts by me! FOr me the main difference in Hk unis is as follows:
HKUST: American style
HKU: British
CUHK: Chinese style (mainland china)
Hong Kong Polytechnic University: ? maybe like a mixture of british and chineseā¦

HKUST is the best choice cause if you look at its history, it was etd only in 1991 and in such lees no of years it has moved up by soo many places on the World Ranking! Not even funny! And it has the maximum number of papers etc amongst all the Asian Unis and maybe the top 6 in the world o somethingā¦
Beautiful campus unlike HKU which is like a building in the middle of Hk, full of tons of people roaming about who have nothing to do with the Uni !

aman: The letter is conditional 30 points for IB and 38 for Full scholarshipā¦ however since I have been predicted for a 38 it is next to impossible for me to fall to a 30 unless I stop studying altogether ! however a variation of 1 or 2 points in the final exam is quite possible so my scholarship has not been āfinalizedā yet, if you mayā¦

Aman: Wah! Congrats buddy! That sounds awesome! XD ALL THE BEST!

Sarthak: Haha. I totally agree with the bit about Indian education system. I think the marks of the indian education system are super-inflated just like how our economy presently is.

Furthermore, what is saddening is the fact that the Grade 12 marks of CBSE/ICSE are not well respected in India itself. Everything has an entrance exam. No doubt there is immense competition but maybe the education system needs a revamp. Have you ever heard a IB student get 98%? An 85 is mostly a 7 and is considered godly. And shockingly enough when I hear people crying after getting a 95%, I just go like O.O

Even the foreign universities donāt trust our english level and we have to write IELTS or other stuffies. So bleagh. ~.~
Oh I also think there is a quantum leap in the syllabus of Grade 11 and 12 in India, combine that with the entrance exams and all the coaching (which no doubt is ultra-expensive) and you get the high suicide rates of my country. ._.

Haha. This seems like a rant! I didnāt mean to. Me <ā going to change all this one day. I think the IB rawks! And I thought you graduated already! Haha. ALL THE BEST! XD
P.S. I have something known as Question Banks and a LOT of past year papers. You want? xP

All: The faculty of Business and Economics at HKU has considered my application favourably, and my application is being vetted now. XD Still waiting for HKUST to reply. IB sent my grades in this week. XDD
Oh does anyone know if the scholarship thing comes together with the admission thing for HKU? Or do I have to like wait. :/

alexavier: I canāt agree any less! I got a 96 in India and was still like rank 8 or something in my school, rest alone the whole of state and country!!
But the good thing is atleast we dont need to prepare for TOEFL/IELTS cause its too easy for us! We can expect atleast that much after studying in English all our lives! As much as I respect the chinese people for studying in their own language, their national language, I respect India for making the tougher choice of sticking with English as a medium for education cause it helps us adapt easily and make better connection !!
I can totally understand the ārantā, if we may call it so! But the University enterance exam is just STUPID!! The universities dont give a crap about your personality, ex-curricular stuff and who you are as a person! All they want is a 98 or 99% !! I swear, I have seen people from IIT who cant make proper conversations! And i dont blame them cause they were never asked to prioritize those things, and/or asked about them!!
Having said all of that, India is making tremendous progress, and iām happy about thatā¦ even if it comes at the cost of people risking their personalities and social life! Well the choice is theirs to make, and I think they can choose wisely for themselves :)

Sarthak: Haha. I know! Iāve met IIT people. And furthermore the quota thingie. So bleagh. ._.
Yeah true.
Anyway! Erm. Me has already graduated! Haha. IB November 2009 Batch. XD

I can email them to you. No problemo. Please tell me subjects you take as well. Drop me an email on alexavier_vie@live.com

Oh and btw. We did Astrophysics and Relativity as Options in Physics HL. Hahaha. Just a random thought. I did three new subjects at the IB. Gosh I am glad to have graduated! I survived. All The Best to you!

^

I TOTALLY AGREE TO SARTHAK AND ALEXAVIER.Thats the reason why I am opting for studies abroad.I seriously believe that Indian Education System(though being quiet large in syllabus) doesnāt care about the personality and well roundedness of its students. It jst counts on your memorizing power.I have come across many peers and classmates who keep on mugging up the entire book form letter to even fullstops to score 100%.I would like to know if that is of any worth if you dont understand the concept behind the subject?I am against Mugging up huge chapters. You forget one word in the sentence and u BLANK OUT.

MANY of my relatives and friend suggest me to continue my undergrad studies in INDIA.They tell me that after completion of the course in HK and even after working there I wont be able to find good placements in INDIA(since I wont to come back to INDIA after my Masters). IS THIS TRUE??

I seriously want to enter HKUST.I am in utter confusion and am seeking opinions from all.
Plz Plz suggest.

Amanagarwal: I know right. Haha. Donāt worry man. I studied in India too. I know how it is. The cut-throat competition with the muggers. >_>
But I also think that maybe it makes Indians stronger and drives us to perform well? I donāt know, just a thought. Hahaha. And the speech thing! Hahaha. Used to happen a looooooooot in my previous school. Hahaha. I used to pity them at times though~

As far as Masters is concerned. Which subject do you plan to do it in? Most people just finish off with an MBA which is what I am hoping to do too.
And by placements do you mean seats in Universities offering Master programmes? Donāt they all have entrance tests in India too. So I donāt see how anyone can stop you from coming back. Haha.
But to be honest right, I think everyone should get work experience after doing bachelors. Seriously 12 years of education + 3/4 years of Bachelors = 15/16 years of education. gulps Iād rather go and experience how my subject is there in the real world. As for as I know for masters, top international universities like students with work experience. Of course your bachelors degree matters too.
When do you have to reply HKUST by?

alexacier: You have graduated already! coolio! man I still have to go through the examination process
Iāll email you so that you can email me the papers back ā¦
hahaā¦ We are doing Astrophysics and Communicationā¦ I know I chose the wrong combination too! iām doing Maths, Phy, and Chem HLs, Mandarin AbInition, Eng A1 SL, and ESS SLā¦ I regret not taking Psychology!!! I love my subjects but psychology is sooo much fun!!

aman: Mugging up is stupid! Imagine if every successful person had done that then they would not have come up with any new ****, and so there would be no inventions and discoveriesā¦!
I believe we should all study for gaining knowledge in the first 7-8 months, and then the remaining 2-3 months you should revise examination style, practicing questions you think would come upā¦
Anyways, that we cant do nything about as yet, so moving on to Uni choicesā¦
HKUST is amazing ! and if you want the standard of an Indian University along with personality development, then HKUST is ātheā place to go!

alexavier: I wanna do ergonomics as my mastersā¦ Mech is my first love and shall give me appropriate eng knowledge, so iām doing it at undergrad levelā¦ however, ergonomics is what I can picture myself doing as a job, so will do that for Mastersā¦
there is a slight dilemma in my mind as of now though, should I do MBA for masters and enter the field iām good in, i.e. management and HR/PR, or should I do psychology (ergonomics) a field that interests me beyond any doubts whatsoever !?
If I had the option I would do the management and psychology degree side by side haha

@alexavier- I plan to do my BBA course from HKUST(if I get in)and then get employed in any reputed company/firm for gaining work exp.[4 yrs of BBA + 2/3 yrs of work exp]
After that i would like to do my MBA from any international university maybe HKUST itself,INSEAD,LBS etc.

After completion of my MBA I would like to come back to INDIA and get employed. But ppl say that INDIAN companies only prefer INDIAN DEGREES and candidates with INTERNATIONAL DEGREES WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GET EMPLOYED IN GOOD COMPANIES.Even if they get employed they would receive minimum salary.

I have to reply HKUST by 1st MARCH.

@Sarthak- Thanks for the opinion bro.

" HKUST is amazing ! and if you want the standard of an Indian University along with personality development, then HKUST is ātheā place to go! "

This is what I want.Hope to see u in HKUST.

aman: That is not true man! Indians with an international degree definitely get a good salary! Unless they are not good, and/or did their course from some not so good international schoolā¦ for example SOO many Indians come to China (Nanjing, Shanghai, and Ningbo etc.) to study medicine, and that degree is worth Nothing at all in India!
Definitely mate! Iāll see you in HKUST :)

Hey ppl i wd disagree that HKUST has a better campus because i took the Virtual Tour of HKUST (through their official website) and the campus did not offer alot of recreational facilities. Yes i know that HKUST education is amazing with the undergraduate research opportunities and rich courses.
BUT their campus is realli small, with just 1 football pitch, and 1 swiming area. 6 badminton/basketball indoor courts. Whereas HKU is really huge and impressive when it comes to facilities. Their library is amazing.
I would recommend all to please go to their websites and check their list of facilities.
HKU has lik 6 sports complex ! with archery and combat zone and what not.
