HKU or HKUST

Sarthak: Haha. All the Best for the exams! shows thumbs up Nah I took it up deliberately I wanted to learn new stuffies~ My combi was, HL: Econs, Physics and Maths & SL: English (A1), French ab initio & Chemistry. And I wanted to take computer science and mandarin ab initio but my school didn’t offer those! >_>

I think you should do something you like? Because at the end of the day you will be working in that particular profession for a loooong time. Unless you plan to study again and change industry.
But no doubt to get into the executive line for companies an MBA is a must. What some people tell me today is that it doesn’t matter where you do your bachelors from, what counts is the MBA. Ultimately, it’s your choice. (:
P.S. : You got mail! xP

Aman: Sarthak is right! Everyone loves people from a good university! Most of the time those guys don’t come back actually. I think if you do an MBA from a well reputed university and your grades are good, you will be recruited during one of the recruitment drives held at the end of your course.
INSEAD is like utter famous! eyes gleam How can those guys not get a job? Naaah. Not true at all. Y’know, one of the advantages of doing a degree abroad and returning home is your different way of thinking and it sets one apart from everyone else.
Furthermore I think HK is the gateway to China (a HUGE Bull market), and that exposure should benefit you a lot in the coming years. That is my personal opinion and one of the reasons I wanted to take Mandarin at IB, but my school didn’t offer it. I think if you can afford it without straining your financial resources you should go to HKUST. My only advice is: whatever you do never regret any decision you made. ALL THE BEST! thumbs up XDD

Dexmax: Haha. I have nooo idea~ I can’t really comment on whose is better. To be honest, a campus isn’t on my criteria for which university to go to. But I guess, it would make a difference to others. shrugs

Hey Guys
I had a chat ystrdy with a guy who recently visited both the HKU and HKUST campus…He is from Paraguay and does A levels in an international school in China…He has conditional offers for engineering in both HKU and HKUST…I thought i would share his findings with all of you-
1)he was miffed at the lack of Internationals at HKUST,he said he hardly saw any but was told that there are presently about 300 undergrad students at this time…
Whereas HKU was extremely cosmopolitan with a lot of intls, and they have plans to make the student body 20 %intl in the coming years it seems…
2)HKU usually gets the best students in hong kong and competition is incredibly stiff for Law/Medicine/Management etc…But he said that the Engineering course is better at UST , HKU is a more prestigious university and hence top students prefer to go there even for engineering(I find this hard to believe)…He compared it to Imperial College and Oxford.Everyone knows that ICL is better but they prefer to go to oxford anyway…
3)HKU is in the dead center of the city whereas HKUST is pretty far away. But he said that UST is very scenic and pretty…
4)Both campuses are pretty Big(HKU is bigger for now but UST has construction going on it seems) and facilities are excellent. He said that graduate prospects are higher for HKU …(really??) as its considered the best in asia
In conclusion-he is of the opinion that HKU is a better overall uni than UST considering everything involved…
But UST has a better/higher ranked engineering course and More research in science
He told me a lot of stuff but i cant remember it right now…therefore ask me if you want any specific information…

and on a lighter note…if i matters to anyone here,HKU apparently has prettier girls on campus…lol…:D:D

nice info,Anand:)

I’m so late for HKU!I’m just applying now with the late fee too unfortunately…atleast, better late than never…

No worries…
good luck!!!

Wasupp ppl. Well i am a friend of amanagarwal here, he kinda suggested me this thread anyway. So i too have got into hkust for BBA(ECON) which wasnt actually i was looking for…i wanted bsc econ and finance…reading a few posts i learned that its easier to shift majors …is that actually true??
I think most of us here have forgotten Singapore Manag. University…they dont publicise themselves much but its actually one of the best b schools in asia.
Okay my main question is how well known is HKUST back here in india ?? any idea ? We all know about NUS and NTU but what about HKU and HKUST ? after grad. if i plan to come back what are the job prospects ??

Hello Blahmesh!!!
I have a cousin who studied at SMU…it is surely one of the best B schools in Asia…
I dont live in India therefore I dont know how reputed HKUST is in India but it is a very good school especially for Technology and Management…I hear Shifting majors is pretty easy if your exams results are good…
reputation wise-HKU>NUS>HKUST>NTU(not valid for Tech and science)
I think its pretty premature to talk about graduate prospects at this point as It totally depends on economic climate at that point of time.So all you can do is get a reputed degree and hope for the best…:)

hey guys, what does this question mean on the HKU form?

Do you wish to apply for transfer of credits upon admission?

Do ppl in HKU and HKUST speak Mandarin?

dexmax234: Believe me the virtual tour does not give you any idea about the campus life! which essentially determines how many recreational facilities you need! if you actually go to the campus, you will be more than happy if not shocked!
HKUST has archery too, and dude the HKU campus is in the middle of Hk as I said before, that is like studying in a shopping mall !! You bet there are a lot of facilities! But they are open to EVERYONE

alexavier: You are right about that! I’ll give it a thought once in University! And I got your mail ! Thanks a lot !!! I shall return the favor once v r in HKUST! who knows maybe free Mc Donalds or something ?! haha

Anand and all: What I believe in is, everyone should try to go to a University that suits them best, and where they are confident they will be able to standout and/or be recognized ! Being an international student I’d rather go to a place with lesser international students to get more exposure and also bring diversity to the campus, which would make it easier for me to make friends!
The girls at HKU and HKUST, I’m not sure about, didn’t place it under my deciding criteria! But to be honest you will be studying in Hk, and will be interacting with people form other Universities all the time, so don’t worry about girls there will be a lot of them ! And besides it all comes down to us, I mean if we are good looking and/or presentable, no matter how many girls there are on campus, you will definitely find one :)

blahmesh: nice name! wht is it short for ? (just kidding) Looking at the wel globalized Universities in India like IIT etc. that offer “NO” special procedures for international applicants and do not give a crap about where you are from or how you did in your course, I guess any decent University will be as good as the others! But leaving that issue separate, the NUS is very popular because of the Singapore Airlines scholarship that gives you full scholarship, whereas HKUST does not openly offer any such scholarship openly through competitive examinations… However, HKUST is very well known and reputed in India!
If you wanna be sure, then check with the Uni you will be applying to for postgrad, as to which Uni will be a better pick ?..

smartchap: Yes do say you want to transfer your credits, it basically means that they will calculate your credits and transfer them to HKUST so you can skip some classes legally  as you would also know you need specific number of credits to get a degree in the course you will be opting for…

michiganfall: Dunno about HKU cause havent been there, but in Hk Mandarin isnt very popular cause they prefer cantonese… however, you could opt for language courses in mandarin at HKUST… and when my parents visited HKUST, they did converse in mandarin with the representative, and she did the same, so I guess they can speak in mandarin easily, but the question is do they speak in mandarin normally right ? well fir that I guess only a student already in HKUST will be right person to ask…

@sarthak-yh i agree, the whole “girl” thing was just was just a joke we shared. It doesnt really matter to be honest…
I had clearly mentioned “on a lighter note”…So its not worth your time…:)

i thought it would be valuable to put my friends opinion up since a lot of us in this thread have applied to both HKU/UST…we can debate all day to which university is better,i for one hope UST is better (not surprisingly,eh??)
but this was just that particular persons opinion who happened to visit both Unis…
Take whatever you want from it and discard it completely if you don’t agree…
Peace!!!

@sarthak : I didn’t know what it meant and selected “No”!Oh,crap…submitted my form too…

anand: haha… I know, however it is certainly not a lighter note thing! girl thing should be on the top priority list, but not the number of girls on campus! :)

smartchap: Its ok dude! Dont worry, just email them later notifying them that you would like to be able to transfer your credits to HKUST…

@Sarthak
Thanks dude thts quite sm info. Cauz i realli lik HKUST because of their UROP and engineering and faculty. And WOAW ! at the open for everybody thing. That is horrible ! :open_mouth: It wd look more lik a market place than a university …
Anyhow I am still awaiting their decisions. HKU said that i have to wait for about 3 weeks more … I didnt ask UST to give me a time frame. It has been a week since their interviews. I am kinda hoping for the best.
Has anyone applied for Electrical/Electronic Engineering?

dexmax: Yeah I guess it is, atleast that is what my dad said when he saw it… he was like it is sure a great University, but the campus doesnt give you that feeling, u knw wht i’m saying
Yeah HKUST might contact you this week, they normally don;t take longer than 2 weeks aftr an interview… Good Luck !

Is HKUST 4-year college?3-year for Hong Kong students,4-year for students from other parts.

@ Sarthak,
Thanks man ! I didnt know that and it surely made me excited. Hoping for the best

@machinganfall
I think its 3 years for both internationals and HK students. Correct me ppl if I am wrong but i think its that way. Anyhow HKU is 3 years thts for sure !

Isnt the engineering 4 years??3 years,seriously??

HK has 7 years of secondary education,i guess we need to take 4 years course.

Yes most of the internationals have to take four year course. The first year will be the foundation year and then the course you applied for.

As Fas as i know all Indians have to take four year course. Not sure about others.

If the engineering is oringinally 4 years,i guess ppl from outside of HK need to take 5 years course for engineering.
