Hey ppl,
good news
Got a conditional offer from HKUST to study electronic engineering (3 years) Conditions are B in Physics or Chemistry for admission. A in Physics and A in Chemistry in GCE A Level for a scholarship of 80,000 HKD :D

Dexmax: Thats great news !! Its awesome to see soo many people get into HKUST! Itāll be more awesome if everyone actually decide to go got HKUST too!!

@dexmax-congrats mateā¦that is a really good offerā¦where are you from??
btw i got AABaa at A level and HKUST did not offer me any kind of scholarship for Chemical engineeringā¦lolā¦Either Chemical eng is highly in demand(UST is the only uni in HK to offer it) or they completely messed up my applicationā¦well sorry for the rant ā¦I am just a bit disappointed i guessā¦ Good luck for the examsā¦:)

@sarthak-thanks manā¦ur school seems really cool

@ Sarthak -
Thanks man
@ Anand
I am from Pakistan
and I had some world distinctions in O Levels and 7 As in AS level so i guess that played the part.

ahh i understand ur rage, but i think they missed on a wonderful person so its their loss :)

and thank you. :)

@dexmax-no worries mateā¦yh i guess those As results made a big differenceā¦
WOWā¦7 A Levels?? The maximum in my school in England was 4ā¦lolā¦I have heard some schools allow 5 but not more than thatā¦taking 7 subjects would be unheard of.
I guess English education seems too relaxed in an Asian countryā¦so making it harder by Taking more A levelsā¦make senseā¦
I did pay the deposit, waiting for offers from a few more unisā¦but for now HKUST is the placeā¦

Anand: I think chem is just in demand thats y they didnt offer you a scholarship, and diff departments have diff criteria for scholarship offers. HKUST also places a lot of importance on extra-curriculars, atleast for scholarship offers i guess, unlike NUSā¦
My school is cool, yes but def not very cool ! I would have changed soo many things if I could ! specially having only 2 formal parties in the entire year! 2 formals and thats it!! they are more focused on academics and sports, no cool parties!

Dexmax: I have never been to Pakistan, but would love to visit! I mean so far I have only heard people talk about Pakistan and how its diff from and similar to Indiaā¦ have you ever been to India before? How different is pakistan from India ?

Hey you guys! What do you think the job prospects of a U.S. citizen getting a chem engineering degree at HKUST and then coming back to the U.Sā¦

Of course, Iām guessing engineering firms will prefer a U.S. degree. But I know HKUST will be quite an experience with a lot of undergrad research opportunities.

Iām just kind of torn, yknow. Plus, Iām in California which means Iām a resident for top ranked schools like UC San Diego and UC Los Angeles.

The trouble is I heard from HKUST before Iām going to hear from the University of California system. And Iām supposed to respond by March 8th.

I donāt know what to doooo!

Also, my offer was also conditional (I heard from them today). I have to maintain a 3.7 on the 4.0 GPA scale; with a 80,000HKD offer for Chemical and Bioproduct Engineering program. :)

@ Phoenix
Many Congratz ! Join the club

Ill advise you to write to tressa chow and tell her that your decision will be delayed because she did say something similar on the form right ? I think they will be good enough to hear. I am also awaiting my US decisions

@ Anand

Its uncommon too here in Pakistan, but I wanted to do something different. Hehe thanks man. It wasnāt really tough u just need motive and determination. I think every1 can do it. They dont because they think its too hard and they are wrong.

@phoneix-Congratsā¦Glad to see another intl in the chem departmentā¦Just ask for an extensionā¦They have been really good with dealing with money matters thus farā¦

@Sarthak-thats good ā¦My school had a little to much emphasis on everything except academicsā¦lol

@Dexmax-Its a cultural thing too i guessā¦Asian style of education is much harder and puts a lot of emphasis on hard workā¦a concept unheard of by most students in Western Landsā¦
A levels must be a breeze for you guys in Pakistan

phoenixice: well said Dexmax, join the club phoenixice!

Anand: hahaā¦ that would have been tough I guess!

phoenix_ice,

Is 80,000 HKD per year? If so, Iād go there and come back to the US to do an one-year master degree (MS). You will have a hard time to get a job in the US since you wonāt be physically available for any interview while in Hong Kong, hence the reason for coming back for a MS. But having the language skill and foreign experience could potentially open more doors to get into some multinational company. Since HKUST is 3-yr (if I am not mistaken), you will graduate with a MS at the same time as your HS peers with bachelors.

phoenix_ice: I second Sam Leeās opinion The US degree is tempting and specially for you cause its close to home too, but really getting that exposure and getting out of your comfort zone will really hamper you CV! besides Hk will open doors for the job market in mainland China, which keeping the current job market situation in mind, is a smart thing to do! HKUST is 3 yrs so you save a year! No Uni can pay you enough scholarship to give you back a year !! I say got for it!

I found these blogs online about exchange students who went to HKUST, thought might be helpful for people looking for opinions on the Uni:

okay everyone knows that HKUST is resort like with its beach and mountain view etc. The sport facilities are good too. The education is awsome with undergraduate research opportunities. And to top it all it has a 3 year program

However fellows I was really worried yesterday night when i saw the pictures of the Housing and rooms :O. Frankly speaking they looked like jail cells rather than āroomsā. They were so cramped and it felt as if I wont even fit on those tiny ābedsā.

Sarthak I need you to console me Tell me its not as bad as it looks !
And is there wifi in the campus ?

@Anand ā¦ Lol breeze might just be too much Well we have alot of good study resources here, and yes then there is always the academic environment of Asia. So yes not so tough ā¦ but not a breeze either ;)

i have a child in Berkeley and we lived in HK b4. HKUST is good in econ, esp. EMBA cuz itās partnered with Kellog of Northwestern. Engineering is average. i donāt think ppl( employers) in US know much about it. If U can afford berkeley, LA and U get in, i think UC is a better choice. However, UCSD ot Irvine fair less better but are still better known by US ppl. For getting a job in US later, US colleges are better. For grad school i think not much difference. Doing a MS after HKUST is an option to get back into the US scene.

Hi, guys, i was just amazed that there are a lot of people who want to go to HK!

i thought I was quite a special student who wants to go to HK

By the way, i am IB Diploma Students

Do you guys think that i can get a conditional offer from HKUST?

anyone from india going to UST?
