hm. my chances in the ivies?

Hello... Im new to this forum actually...
I'm an asian living in BC, Canada (a Canadian citizen)

GPA: 94.37/100 and 1st in the class of 62...
my counsellor tells me to convert it to 4.0 scale by simply dividing the mark by 25 but i wasn't really sure about how to do it... Took the most challenging curriculum that the school offered including every honors class possible... and my school is ranked the first in BC by Fraser Institute

SATI: C/R 740
Math 790
Writing 700
... took the december one again but... i'm not sure if I'll do better... sigh

SATII: Math IIC 800
Physics 800
Chem 790

AP: the school didn't allow me to take any AP in my junior year... I'm currently taking AP Euro History, Calculus, Physics B, and Chem.

Also since 2003 university hospital program... I've been doing correspondence with a prof I met at the pathology department about information on things like DNA related stuff like Southern Blotting techniques... planning to put it in my essays.

I think it's really bad that I couldnt take any AP before my senior year... but wut can I do... the school didn't allow me to... o well...

So wut are the chances? also could you recomment my matches and safeties too? I was thinking of WUinSTL JHU NW Emory Swarthmore Vanderbilt... ish but now I think again... they are also pretty tough... ugh.

*Oh yeah I forgot to mention that I am thinking of premed... biophysics, biochem, neuroscience sort of major. Also, I think I've got pretty decent essays and rec letters.

jeez, i dunno, do you think you could win some more awards between now and when you send in your apps?
i don't think 10 is gonna cut it.
i'd say all the ivies are solid matches except HPY, but I'd give you a solid shot at those too.

Divide your 94.37 by 25, = 3.77 (cause 100 divided by 25 is 4, which puts it on the 4.0 scale)

Yeah, that could work^^^...but schools usually set 93-100 as 4.0....

i don't think converting like that is actually fair.

is 93-100 really considered a 4.0? does anyone know the actual breakdown?

SweetestSith, the poor kid got an 800 on his MathIIC SAT2, I don't think that's exactly what he was asking....

Usually GPA is a weighted average, ethereallkev: weighted by credits per course.

Usually it goes as follows:

(Check this with your school)
A=4
B=3
C=2

Multiply the grade by the credits, sum them all, and divide by the total number of credits.

If your school weights your grades already in your GPA scale, then it should be the same.

-Dan

hm... so any recommendation?
more awards... hm... geez -_-;

hes being sarcastic foo.

you've got solid chances everywhere

Looking good

Dividing it by 25 will make your GPA look much less impressive than it should be... probably UW GPA should be calculated something like this:
A = 4.0
A- = 3.67
B+ = 3.33
B = 3.0

and so on
or just straight A=4.0 B=3.0 like others have suggested

wow....so it is very clear that you are at least in the top 10% of mathematicians in Canada :-P I'm not sure how crazily competitive each school is with internationals, but i think likely chances at all the mentioned schools

holy molly you got nice achievements... but it works against you cause your an asian mathematician ;) . ha, jk, you got great stats.

btw do you go to a private school?

yeah... to be honest... I dun like the look of the awards... I mean.. It's too math-concentrated. hahahah; I'm just worried that I don't really have that many leadership or research-related stuff. LoL when I first came to this forum and saw all these ppl with extremely good GPA and SAT scores as well as crazy EC's... I was thinking... o man I dun have chance...lol

yes. a university prep independent school. Very small... K-12 with around 330 K-7 students and 300 8-12 students. Really new with 10 yrs of history (compared to some older prep schools in BC) but I still luv it :D It's the best co-ed school in BC!!;)
