Hmm, can I make it?

Hi there!

this is my first post, so try to bare with me. Here are my grades:

gpa: 3.6 unweighted
SAT I:
Critical Reading: 680
Math: 610
Writing: 550

Extracurricular:
Freshman year:
-did Marching band

Sophomore Year:
-As apart of the country i'm stationed in's band, we played for the President once.

Junior Year:
-worked summer (3 weeks) in US Embassy-type job.
-Band traveled to Montreal, won 1st place (does that count?)

Current Summer:
-worked again, US Embassy job (6 weeks)
-I plan on doing MUN this year

Classes:
-this year will be second year of Spanish
-taking two AP's, Econ. and Literature.

I moved abroad with my family after freshman year, but I lived in Georgia before I left. I spent sophomore year being home schooled.

I hope to major in either Political Science or International Relations. Here are my choices:

-New York University
-Georgia State University
-McGill University
-Boston University
-Columbia University
-University of Georgia
-American University
-Indiana University - Bloomington
-Northwestern University
-Suffolk University

Heres my analysis

Safety's:
-Georgia State University
-Boston University (pending SAT Writing >590)
-Indiana University - Bloomington
-Suffolk University

Reach:
-Columbia University
-UGA

I was also thinking about applying to University of California, Santa Barbara, but considering how few out-of-staters get in, I probably won't.

Thoughts?

I forgot to mention, I am Latino, but grew up in the States. also Male.

I would put BU as more of a high match

McGill would be a low reach. Their median SAT’s for enroled students is 2060. Also, BU is definitely not a safety, it is a high match. Indiana University would be a match, not a safety.

Columbia-unrealistic reach
NYU-reach
BU, American-match

Are the OOS publics and the privates financial safeties?

"Are the OOS publics and the privates financial safeties? "

It’s a mix of both public and private. I’m going to narrow down my choices as I factor in my finances…right now, I’m more selecting based on preference, as opposed to monetary limit.

How is NYU a reach? Here are their scores:
critical reading: 610-710
math: 600-720
writing: 620-710
avg gpa: 3.6

my reading is on the upper spectrum, my math is a bit on the lowside, but still within, and I’ll agree that my writing is too low. but otherwise, my gpa is the same, so possibly a high match instead?

New York University REACH
Georgia State University DON’T KNOW
McGill University REACH
Boston University REACH
Columbia University TOTALLY OUT OF REACH
University of Georgia SLIGHT REACH
American University REACH
Indiana University - Bloomington SLIGHT REACH
Northwestern University OUT OF REACH
Suffolk University MATCH

BU isn’t a reach, American is a match. Northwestern is a big reach, so is Columbia. But if you want to take the time to fill out an application to those places, what have you got to lose? I would say Suffolk is a safety, also. This person above me is a little harsh, haha.

LOL @soze. I’m so sad, all my hopes have been shattered thanks to you! HOW COULD YOU.

anyways.

@shannon, agreed, both Northwestern and Columbia are bigtime reaches. BU is more of a high match, true.

It’s essentiaal to pay attention to finances from the start. It’s esay to end up with acceptances to only schools you can’t afford. Just read the aid board here in April. Your safeties and matches are not good aid schools. If you need aid, you need to correct that.

Most likely rejection at Columbia, Northwestern, McGill, and NYU

@redroses Thank you. A nice wake up call to that was/is in order.

@rOadTo3b: again, Columbia and Northwestern I’ll grant, but what about McGill and NYU? What specifically is not up to par about my application?

This and

this

Re: McGill: your SAT scores are 1840. The median SAT for students enroled at McGill is 2060. You are 220 points below their average. That makes McGill a reach. Your GPA is also below their average. SAT and GPA is all that they look at.
