It's not just the current administration that'd have trouble drafting females... People have been conditioned to view men getting shot as demonstrating glory or bravery, but we still use the phrase "women and children" to mean "innocent."
Totally true. And then there's the "individual females are more important than individual males" thing, which is really the practical justification behind the protection...lots of reasons.

On another note...what would be a huge problem with drafting now, as opposed to during the 1940s or what have you, is that the rise of near-instantaneous global communication has made the guy in the other hemisphere much too human to want to kill for his countrys decisions (unless you've been on myspace, I suppose, and then nuking begins to sound reasonable). Yay globalization.

All male residents must register within 30 days of your 18th birthday.
From the SS website:

The Law

Registering with Selective Service is the law. Failure to register is a felony, punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and/or five years in jail.

*All male U.S. citizens and male aliens residing in the U.S., ages 18 through 25, are required to register. A man is exempt while serving on Active Duty in the Armed Forces or if he is a cadet at a service academy. Lawfully admitted nonimmigrant aliens holding valid student visas or members of a diplomatic or trade mission and their families are not required to register. For more information, contact the Selective Service System.

You guys sicken me. First off, why is there all this talk about a draft when we all know that a draft is completely out of teh question and will NEVER happen anytime soon (within 50 years). We have a strong army and military and their memberships and supply arent dwindling. Second, so what if there was a draft!? Are you guys going to sit here and complain about your liberal and 13th amendment rights and missing college (OH NO! NOT COLLEGE!!!), or are you going to get up and go fight for the country that has given you every single right that you have deserved and that people in other countries can only dream about? Sure fighting is scary and you have good chance of dying! But in the end isnt it worth it to preserve a country like this? Honestly, you sit here and bash the president and war and his policies, but remember that only in America do you have the right to openly express your opinions like that! Isn't worth fighting for.....

Um, yeah, they can't meet recruitment goals, so they changed the goals

The Vets are not geting enough care

With colleges in reach for more students who in the past would have joined it creates a shortfall

I will bet you that some kind of draft will happen, especially if something happens in Iran, cause we don't have enough soldiers in Afghnistan and Iraq now

And a draft to do what go where? So, when you turn 18, go for it, your name gives away that you aren't ready to enlist anyway

We are at war, as we hear every day, and you are yelling at everyone to sign up and skip college, well, go for it

I didnt tell anyone to skip college, but if you are drafted you shouldnt be an ******* and say you have to go to college instead of defending your country! My brother was in Iraq so I know all about this so dont tell me that im telling kids to skip college. IF you love the US, YOU SHOULD FIGHT FOR THEM IF THEY NEED YOU ITS AS SIMPLE AS THAT!

And if you really are a mom get out of here this business concerns you-NOT, or are you one of those moms that wants complete control over what their kids do? Yeah, thats right, I have sunk to petty insults!

I don't know about this, but I'm pretty sure that if you're drafted, you don't necessarily have to go into combat... you can help out with other military/war-related stuff. You can check this because I'm not sure but I think this is true.

I have no desire to go fight in a war if I ever do have to go into combat--I mean, no matter what lofty ideals may be waved before me, the truth is I don't want to die. But I do believe that in the case of a draft that is truly for national defense--a justified war (and I guess it really depends on your personal views about these things), we do have an obligation to fight for our country. Yet I personally believe truly justified wars are pretty rare. It would have to be like Iran getting nukes and then trying to attack us...etc.

And, I don't see why girls shouldn't be drafted like guys (although I shudder at the idea, being a girl and feeling not too hot about a draft in general anyways). If a draft is justified by the idea that because we enjoy all the benefits of living in America, we need to be willing to reciprocate...then I don't see any non-arbitrary distinction between females and males in this respect.

BTW, I think a war with China is very unlikely.

That really true? I think there's a longer period than that given. I certaintly did it after a few months. (Hopefully I don't get arrested haha.)

I think a war with China won't happen for around 150 years...what nation wants to destroy their #1 trading partner (that was non-imperialistic)?
In some countries all high school graduates are required to enter the army (South Korea, Israel). I would want a draft if the difference between having one and not was the destruction of the US. Otherwise, I don't believe it should be instituted-it causes a great deal of problems that are not exactly worth it, and is never 100% effective.

Trust me, I oppose the draft, but if called upon, I believe every fit male has a duty to serve.
Just out of curiousity, do you think this is an obligation of each person to his country? In other words, is it an Iraqi's duty to serve his country if called to upon to do so?

Yeah, I mean, what if the country the person is serving really hasn't given that person anything? Why should an Iraqi serve his country if he has been oppressed by the government his whole life?

eh, draft doesnt sound that appealing because i'd have to get up early and engage in physical training all day. but being around hot sweaty studs all day and prolly hooking up with some of em, plus raiding enemy cities and looting their treasure doesnt sound too bad. if there is a draft, why NOT go? is life that important..

besides, what exactly defines fit? If a person is obese and can't run a hundred yards without collapsing, then does he deserved to be drafted too (despite the fact that he doesn't have a disability)?
