Hmm...where should I apply?

I'm being honest here, I'm a rising senior and I'm really interested in several colleges.

In fact...here are my stats?

Black male in FL
GPA = 3.85 UW/4.35 W
SAT = 2160 (1530 w/o writing...):::800 M, 730 V, 630 W
SAT II Math IC and IIC = 800
ACT = 31 :-| (I was kind of mad that day, distracted I guess?)

APs
5 Calculus BC (AB subscore = 5)
5 Statistics
5 English Language
5 Physics B
4 World History
1 Computer Science A...LOL

Extra curriculars...
Mu Alpha Theta President I somewhat rebuilt this team... (10-12)
Business Professionals Of America Parliamentarian (12)
Academic Team (11-12)
Science Honor Society (12)
Soccer team (9-12)
Cross-Country (9)
Theater Company (11...although I haven't been able to do any plays this year...)

And club soccer outside of school and also I play on an ultimate frisbee team, I guess I could mention that

Awards/Honors
National Achievement Finalist (almost definitely)
National Merit Finalist (maybe...definitely commended though...I had a 212 PSAT)
USAMO qualifier (130 136(?), have to check that... AMC-12, 11 AIME are my highest scores)
Florida ARML team
1st at the US National High School Mathematics Championships
2nd in the calculus division at the county math contest for 10th and 11th grade
Way too many awards from Mu Alpha Theta contests to list, I'll just say I do pretty well in those
5th at Business Professionals Of America Regionals for Java Programming
4th at Business Professionals Of America Regionals for Financial Analyst Team

Volunteer Service
Oh I guess I can say I volunteer as a Mathcounts coach at my local middle school once a week starting this senior year?

Summer Programs
University Of Florida African-American Scholars Program

Hooks
Well I guess race, and the fact that I've done well in prestigious math contests (USAMO). And also I'm an athlete sorta, maybe that counts.

Gayyy shiiit
I've gotten out-of-school suspension for slapping another kid with a newspaper on a school bus as a joke and apparently I "provoked" him to punch my friend in the face (he was aiming for me though...). Oh and I was the one who complained to the school too...YAY. My school blows.

Think I have a chance at getting into Harvard, MIT, Stanford, or Columbia? Lol?

And umm I lived in Japan my freshman year (dad's job), but I can't say I can fluently speak Japanese :-(. I'm mediocre...haha.

I think you have solid chances at all of them. USAMO is impressive, and you have decent GPA/SATs with URM status. I think, if you express remorse for the suspension or are able to explain it away very well, you should be very competitive.

Just be real honest about the suspension and nobody will care. It sounds like a minor incident.

You have great--and I mean great--credentials and background--especially for a URM. You can get into a lot of great colleges--and maybe get a full-ride at some of them.

I'd try the Ivies you are most interested in (apparently Harvard and Columbia), MIT, Stanford, Caltech, Duke, John Hopkins, plus maybe UC Berkeley and UCLA. Maybe use Univ of Florida as your backup along with someplace like Carnegie-Mellon.

I just realized that your W GPA is probably not capped--meaning that since you get no URM advantage at UCLA and UC Berkeley, you may be just below their cutoffs. If you are 4.1 or more UC GPA (sophomore and junior years only count plus you get 8 extra points for the honors), I would apply to these schools, otherwise I'd skip them.

Here's the link for how they determine the UC GPA if you are interested.

Wow, how can you make usamo and get a 1 comp sci a...

regardless, you're set for anywhere. i mean...you have AA on your side AND usamo...

Yeah the suspension was pretty minor actually and I was very ****ed off because pretty much I really was just defending myself (actually my bad I kicked him where it hurts). Even worse was that I didn't apologize about it lol. Coming back to it I still really don't regret that. I'm pretty sure you only mention OSS and expulsions on the application though because we have like this time-out thing during school which is In-School Detention and AAP (which is half-day ISD). I really doubt they're going to look into my one time suspension when you have people that sell drugs in school and stuff though.

But the 1 on AP Computer Science, we really didn't do any programming the entire year. We were playing Counter-Strike and stuff instead.

But yeah my whole list is...
Harvard - dream school
MIT
Stanford
Columbia
Duke
University Of Florida - safety and $$$
University Of Central Florida - safety
Maybe I'll go for UCLA as well (I can't stand the atmosphere at Berkeley)

But yeah my UW GPA starting from my sophomore year is a 4.0 =) and higher w/ the honors extra points. Maybe I have a chance at the UCs?

I really think you can get in pretty much anywhere, except maybe the top UCs because they dont have AA, but i dont think you really need it. USAMO qualifier+2160+3.85+URM should be good enough for MIT, and its very good for the top ivies

Well my GPA for the UCs would be a little above 4.29 (I had one B in grades 10-11). I guess that's competitive.

warpedklown1335:

UCB/UCLA: Slight Reach (out of state)

Why would the UCs be a slight reach? I have a 4.0 UW GPA from 10th grade onwards...4.3 GPA by UC's scale...

Oh and apparently my suspension was expunged (I really didn't do anything though...seriously...I'm not trying to avoid responsibility for actions...I really just well...sat there).

So that means I have a clean slate, w00t.

Why would he want to waste his time with a UC, he can clearly do much better.

Well I'm applying to Harvard, Columbia, MIT, Stanford, Duke, UF, and UCF to give you all an idea...

And idk I think I might mention National Spelling Bee...even though it was in middle school...should I?

212 is not a good enough PSAT (usually) for semi-finalist, even. I know people with 221's who haven't gotten it. It does depend on the state, though.

MIT could definitely be reasonable, since you'd be a minority. Harvard, too, actually. None of your schools seem impossible. The UC's could be slight reaches, though, considering how much they're into California students.

Good luck!
