correlations guys?

D’s prep school has two levels of AP chem: Regular AP Chem and Death AP Chem. Students from Death Chem always score 5s on the AP exam, but generally only pull mid 600s on the Subject test.

Format of the Subject test is a bit strange, so unless you study to that particular test format, your score will take a hit. As that test results are only partially based on your knowledge of chemistry, correlation is not really possible.

Toadstool is correct. The formats of the two tests are different (well at least one part). You would need to have prepared for the subject test differently. I would think a 5 on the AP chem exam would look “better” only because it involves an essay portion as well.

I got an 800 on SAT II Chem and I’m expecting a 5 on the AP test. Similarly, I got a 780 on SAT II US History and I’m also expecting a 5 on the AP test. Correlation, yes; causation, no.

interesting…

770 on US History…4 on AP. lolz.

i was expecting a 5 as well, so I was in shock when i got a 4. Oh well, doesn’t matter now. Cornell 2013 <3

collegeboard2009, how’d you find out?

He or she’s a witch!

or perhaps it’s from last year…

yeah, it was from last year…thought i made it obvious haha

I don’t think so. Based on last year’s scores on Chem, people were able to scrape above 700’s and still get 4’s The better rule is this: 5’s always get above 700’s and 700’s are generally 4+'s.

I think it is a necessary condition, but not a sufficient one. If you can’t score above 700, then it will be hard to get a 5. However, it is easily conceivable that you blow the essay on the AP on a topic that is not covered in depth on the SAT II.

I don’t see how a person who gets a 5 on the AP test could score less than 700 on the subject test. It seems rather obvious.

You learn the stuff for AP, and if you took AP, you probably care about your scores enough to study hard for the SAT.

I think there is causation involved to some degree.

My friend self studied AP Bio and got a 5, then took the subject test and got a 730.

My friend took AP World History.
5 on exam
6xx on subject test.

I got a 740 on Chem and a 780 on USH, so I really hope that is some foreshadowing for my AP scores.

I got a 740 on Chem and a 4 on the AP

I think SAT Subject Tests are kind of different than the APs. I took World History and US History(both SAT II and AP) and I don’t really remember the world sat II but for US, I thought the subject test multiple choice was much harder. I got a 620 of the world history SAT II and a 5 on the AP exam. Then the next year I got a 720 on the US history SAT II and I thought I was set for a 5 on the AP exam due to my previous experience, but I got a 4. I was pretty shocked, but I guess I didn’t do so great on the essays for AP US and I think I did pretty well on the AP world essays. I guess if you do well on your AP exam essays/free response and you got above 700 on the SAT II then you’re probably set for a 5. But if you don’t do so well on the essays you might still get a 4.

I don’t think so. I got a 780 on the Chemistry Subject Test (and I took it entire year after the class with very little prep), get I scored a 4 on the AP test.

750 in Chem and 5 on the test.
790 in Math Level II and 5 on Calc AB (although there is no Calculus on the Subject Test lol)
