hmmm so does 700+ on subject test correlate with 5 on AP test? =]

790 on chem, 5 on AP

the sal of my school got a 740 on chem, 3 on AP

5 on AP Eng Language, 770 on SATII Literature
5 on AP US History, 740 on SAT II US History

Those are the only correlating AP/SAT IIs I took.
The test formats are very different, and practice tests for both types are vital for success.

I’d say the high SAT II score definitely looks better, since you don’t even have to show college your AP scores.
In addition, many colleges are looking to put less weight on SAT II scores in the future.

Eng Lit. correlates more to SATII Lit than Eng Lang does.

AP US History - 730 SATII, 5 AP

I took Eng Lang AP Junior year and took SAT II Lit at the end of that year. I took Eng Lit AP Senior year (and with a horrible horrible teacher), I am expecting a 5 hopefully.

My Eng Lang AP teacher must have just prepared me really well.

AP exams are massively curved, whereas most SAT II’s aren’t nearly so.

SAT II’s are pretty heavily curved. 700+ you can still miss maybe a third of the test, depending on the subject.

well, they’re different - i got a 5 on ap chem, but a 790 on sat II chem, and a 5 on ap bio w/ a 790 on sat II bio

It also depends on when you studied for your AP and SATII tests, because that was my problem. I scored around 640 on my SATII Chemistry test even though I scored a 5 on my AP test but that was because I took it in November, hadn’t had a Chemistry class since May, and didn’t really study (=all my own fault). I would have taken the SATII test in June had I known that I would need them (I was originally not planning on applying out-of-state, i.e. only to ASU so I was thinking it would be a waste to take them… big mistake :S), and perhaps I would have received a better score but who knows?

What’s even weirder, I think, is that I scored a 4 on AP French junior year, then when onto take the SATII French w/Listening test in Nov. and scored an 800 (w/o much studying). Of course, language tests follow a different course (you can’t cram for them, etc. etc.) but still… o_O

I find SAT’s generally easier. I got 700+ on SAT Physics, but I’m expecting a 1 or a 2 (yes, I like to be pessimistic) on AP Physics.

The SATs seemed harder to me because there was less room for error.

5 on AP Bio, 680 on Bio-M.

I got a 4 on AP U.S. History and a 580 on the subject test, as well as a 3 on AP Lang and 580 on Lit subject test.
I think I suck at subject tests and the SAT in general. I didn’t think about the differences in test format when I took subject tests, and that really hurt me. I studied how to answer AP questions but not SAT. I honestly think that AP is a lot more difficult in content. The SAT is just designed to hate normal people. I think the test itself can detect if you haven’t done any practice questions and deducts 100 points :]

SAT’s are easier in content but try to trick you, but AP’s are a lot harder in content but it doesn’t trick you as much

Are subject tests supposed to be taken after AP courses? I took bio (780), chem (780), and physics (800) after honors classes. People who take subject tests in my school usually do that, then take the AP tests after the corresponding AP courses, which are offered mainly to seniors and which very few people take (I didn’t, except for physics).

AP US 5, US History SAT-II 800… not that that’s helpful. I think I had a 5 on both parts of AP Physics C, but Physics B is a lot more like the SAT-II material.

“Are subject tests supposed to be taken after AP courses?”

LOL I took the subject tests before starting the junior courses.

Yea theres probably a correlation, but there are a few exceptions.
I read somewhere that someone got an 800 on SAT II but 3 on AP test for Physics.

Me: 800 SAT II World History, 5 on AP exam
Friend: 800 SAT II world history, 4 on AP exam

In my experience, yes, there is a correlation, but you have to know the specific formats of each test to score your best. SAT subject test in US History was more nit picky, while AP questions were more based on the big picture with some trick questions. For this reason, the AP test was easier than the SAT subject test was.

I think that there will always be a bit of difference, just because the AP tests are so essay-based. But yeah, there must be some sort of correlation because knowledge/ proficiency in a subject should always help you on any sort of test. I think that my SAT II scores matched my APs pretty closely:

770 US History = 4 on AP US
760 Literature = 5s on both English Language and Lit
740 Latin = 5 on AP Latin Vergil Exam

780 USH - 5 on AP USH
800 Chem - 5 on AP Chem
