in college how much money do you need? my sis is willing to send me 200, my mom 200-300 so will that be enough assuming i get a meal plan and stuff? (this is in general, i havent heard from LA yet). I kinda..dont want to have a job if its not necessary LOL

You'll need over $1000 each for meal plan and living on campus. Books you can borrow, or buy used for ~ $300 / year (bad estimate actually).

Plus your education fee which I will not state here to scare you.

That's why there are grants, scholarships, and loans.

are you talking about spending money (outside of actual tuition and housing)?

You filled out the FAFSA right?

yeah i did FAFSA and for tuition and books and meal plans my dad told me to just take out student loans. As soon as i graduate, my grandma (whose a multimillionaire X_X) said she'd pay it off and said she didnt want to waste the money on me if i ended up dropping out.

the 500 im getting is im talking about spending money.

Well, is that $500 per month? Per year?

I think you'd need at least $300 extra to cover Instructional Enhancement fees. For my roomies and myself, financial aid doesn't cover that.

its 500 a month. instructional enhancement fees...what the heck is that..i keep thinking viagra

IEI = random fees. supposedly used for equipment in the class, projectors and the like

=

WTH IEI TAKES OUT 300 A MONTH? aiite my mom is sending me more dough

oh, gawd. lol, not THAT kind of enhancement.

UCLA charges you $6 per unit taken to cover computer labs, class websites, etc. So, my previous stated amount is wrong; it's usually around $100 instead. (haha, sorry for making you hyperventilate or something ^^)

Well, $500 per month is freaking luxurious if it's just for spending money on random stuff. For school supplies, I'd say $50 per quarter. The rest is up to how many impulse buys you make. I get by on about $200 per quarter (to spend on electronics, take-out food, clothes, etc.)

$500 a month?! Okay, only if you're drinking Jamba Juice for every single meal.

no no 500 on spending money LOL. im gonna take out loans (including for meal plan) because my gma will pay it all off but only if i graduate. She doesnt want to invest 50 k in me and have me drop out of school after a year

Hmm, we'll, you'll be able to have a better idea of this after you get your financial aid offer from UCLA.

Yeah, I know you were talking about spending money... I was just kidding about JJ because I go there somewhat frequently. :o

Btw, if you've seen the estimated $500 per quarter or whatever cost for books - it's a large exaggeration considering you might use the same books across quarters (e.g. Stewart's Calculus). Also, you might have course readers (books made out photocopied pages from different sources and/or original material written by the professor that cost much less than textbooks) instead of actual textbooks for classes, especially General Education courses. Just FYI, and don't worry too much about the details now. This will make sense in a few months.

Honestly, I think $500 is a lot... Even if I go out on weekends, I usually spend like $20 bucks for a meal or something. I never buy anything from the student store except shampoo and whatnot once a quarter and the same goes for school supplies... perhaps once a quarter. I also never buy UCLA clothing. FYI, if you do decide to buy UCLA clothing, they have these big sales once or twice a quarter.

LMAO yeah..lets see if i get in before i buy UCLA clothing. Although i already have a bruins shirt that i bought to wear on the day of UCLA vs USC ; D and my my did it pay off on top of the fact i won 20 bucks hahahaa

yeah dont worry $500 a month for spending money is plenty, even if books are part of that equation. i might even say thats excessive, although if you end up at ucla its not.

ucla is really generous with their meal plan. you get gourmet stuff from coffee bean/tea leaf for free! i mean screw the dining halls, the bruin cafe treats is what rich people have

LOL im not rich ; (. And i was talking in general..i dont wanan jynx myself for la

Jynx is a pokemon.

hahah...ANYhow, $500 is plenty. don't worry about it.

great! thanks. Is it possible to pay off all my student loans right when i get out of college? or will i have to pay in increments?

Pokemon...they don't even air the show anymore. its completely dead. my favorite was Onyx..he looked so cool!

You could pay off all your loans right out of college, provided that you (or your rich grandma ;) ) have the money to.
