Harvard MUN!!!
Any information would be greatly appreciated!!!
Please tell me as much as possible.I am going there in December and I would like to know it all by then!

What's Harvard MUN?

It's Harvard Model United Nations of course!!
And it is considered to be the best of all MUNs in the world.

Whats Model United Nations?

Too bad the Harvard debate tournament isn't the best in the world.

Harvard Model United Nations is a simulation of the United Nations.

You get assigned to be the delegate for one nation, and you debate issues on a committee-environmental, disarmament, legal, humanitarian and so on. You learn your country's policy, write position papers and resolutions and so on.
The Harvard MUN style is the best in my opinion and the MUN is amazing, primarily because of the competition..

I love it and so do all other kids who wanna study international relations

hey debate_addict, i went last year :)
im planning to go this year, and i dont think they updated the website

I couldn't be in MUN unless i represented America.....

Great! Can you tell me more about it auxsoleil? Is it as good as people say?

Oh, you were asking about it ... I thought you already attended (whoops) :)
Harvard MUN is, hands down, the best conference I've been to. I was on the World Trade Organization last year and here is what I've found.
1) If you've been to any other MUN conference, you know that you are given "background guides." If not, these background guides basically tell you what the 2 Topics area. Okay, so at Harvard, the background guides are BEASTLY about 50 pages or so and seriously, you are expected to know it pretty thoroughly.
2) Get your background guide and your country assignment as soon as possible - head over to the UN website and access your country's UN representative website (i know china's website is fantastic!!)
3) The chairs of the MUN committees at Harvard are very intense- they expect a lot from the delegates. Resolutions usually span 3~6 pages, and on big General Assembly committees, up to 10. Prewritten resolutions are a big NO-NO!
hmm what else ... Sit in the 2nd row or so, its the best spot ~
Oh, and dont get toooo scared though because about 1/2 of hte pople there don't CARE. they sit in the back and dont talk. usually the people sitting in the front 3 ~5 rows talk the most (which you should be doing, if you want an award)
AND YES HARVARD MUN IS AMAZING!

hey debate-addict, what school will be from / do you know your country/commitee assignment yet?? (im going again this december, but my school is really really late in giving us our assignments)

Heya. Thanks a lot. I've been to other MUNs, and the study guides are big-i know that (i've actually written one of similar length for an MUN-mind-numbingly tiring!!)
Your school btw is not late!
HMUN is late. The meeting for example for our HMUN at school is on Monday, and Harvard will share more info later this spring (i think prior to the summer)
Thanks for the info though!

I was at HMUN this year, and it was amazing. My first MUN experience with two weeks to prepare (and I was in the ICJ) but I loved it anyways.

oh, when i said late, i meant REALLY LATE. my school tells us our assignments in november or so! (next school year), so that's kinda a pain ...

That is REALLY late!
You should try to supersede your school's system. It's screwing you over.

hey debate-addict, how would you recommend i "supercede" the school's sytem??

Go for it alone: apply on your own, and preferably aim at a committee non-GA with fewer delegates.

Push your school through talking to the teacher in charge or the headmaster

Try to get the subjects earlier, or at least talk to a teacher and ask her for a particular committee(brainstorming here:D)

(hehe debate_addict, and i thought you were a newbie in MUN)
- number 1 won't be looked on favorably by the club leadership ... soo unfortunately no
- i will try number 2 :) and btw our MUN faculty advisor does NOTHING. everything (and i mean everything!) is organized by the Presidents

You thought I was an MUN newbie?? I'm heartbroken :(:( XD.
Try that. If you cant do that then you can at least to the more general reading, like UN charter analysis, some general agenda reading, etc.
:):)

that's what it seemed like when you were asking about HMUN - but your previous post + your email = that illusion was shattered

okay anyways, im actually going to go talk to the MUN in my school after we find out about the elections for positions (cos i applied for Vice Pres) .. i dont want to annoying the Pres while they are still reviewing my app :)
