Hobby vs. structured EC

So, I've recently decided I want to get into video editing/animation, seeing as how I really enjoy it and lack other creative outlets (other than writing). Seeing as how I'm already prepping for two AP's and one SAT II, I only have time for a few EC's. My newest EC is Model UN, but I'm debating whether I should drop it in favor of the video stuff. The video stuff would be more of a hobby than an EC, right? Is there anything I could do to make it more of an EC?

Bump

10 char

A lot of productive hobbies can be listed as ECs. I suppose you could make it more “legitimate” by entering competitions.

What if competitions for this stuff don’t exist? Even if they do, do you think if I start right now, I’d be good enough to do well at some of these competitions?

You could probably find some listed here:
[Art and Wrting | JHU CTY](http://cty.jhu.edu/imagine/resources/competitions/art_writing.html)

I think Scholastic Art & Writing would accept this kind of thing.

And it’s certainly not necessary to enter competitions…this “counts” as an EC regardless, and entering competitions was just a suggestion. But it would show colleges that you’ve developed some skills.

Would I be able to send in a video or two as art supplements? Are videos even art?

Yes and yes, but you should not send in an art supplement unless you’re extremely good/talented.

Things to do with those skills:
Submit films into film festivals. (e.g hsfilmfest.com).
Submit animations into community competitions and MAYBE film festivals.
Create a business w/ your skills.
Submit videos to youtube to build a fanbase.

Don’t send in art supplements if you don’t think you’re good enough for a competition. Enter a couple of competitions first to build up your credibility, and if you win enough, then you could decide whether or not to send in the art supplements (otherwise it’ll look like amateur hour).

Film festivals are easy to win, you just need a good team and a couple solid weeks’ worth of effort.

start a film club at school? it’s a lot easier when you have friends to work with; plus it would be more “legitimate” if it weren’t just you, by yourself

Hm…I like those ideas. Since I’m just starting out, do you guys think that it would be feasible to expect to be “good” by junior year summer? (I’m a soph now)

Also, would an animation video set to music be considered “art”? As in, I have an idea for a video that sort of explores the human condition, and I plan to work on it as I get better at editing. I hope to have a full length, good video done before application time in two years. I’ll be making the video myself, but I can’t compose music; I’ll have to take music from some other source.

I just did some further research into this, and it turns out that I have to be able to draw well. I’m a horrible artist :(

I really wanted to do animation, though. :(((((
