Hello, CC!
I was told by my counselor that I was nominated for HOBY. However, the program is an issue with my parents. My family does not see how the program would benefit me in the long run. So, did HOBY help you? Did you like the program? And yes, this is the cliche question, but will it help in college admissions? Thanks.
Also, if anyone is planning to go to HOBY, feel free to comment down below!
Great program. All the colleges know it. Many students end up staying with the program, as volunteers, for years . Can’t understand why your parents would want you to turn down an honor.
I don’t think they do it anymore. We had to pay for DD, but she loved it and it changed her personality to a leader. She also listed it under honor section of her application and wrote about it in on of her supplemental essays.
I had to pay somewhere around $200 for HOBY when I attended last summer, but I definitely think it was worth it for the content, but also considering the fact that you are paying for housing and meals for about three days. Aside from being a good thing to put on a resume, HOBY really focuses on helping students find a cause they are passionate about, and they place a lot of emphasis on leadership and service (they call it L4S). I know a lot of people left inspired and better equipped to do their own service projects, which I think is honestly the best result of HOBY. I’d be happy to answer any questions you have about the program!
@ kitkat231 My son was accepted and I am wondering what the weekend is like? You mentioned that you have to pay for housing? Our school does not pay so it is $200 for us as well. Do you keep in touch with your student cohort? Have you participated in other HOBY activities since?
@magnetnh Well, in terms of the major things we did, we got to visit the State Legislature and meet representatives, we had a morning block for service on Saturday (my group made dog chew toys for an animal shelter), and the mayor came and gave us a lecture. I personally don’t keep in touch regularly with my cohort, but we have a group message that is pretty active. I haven’t gone to HOBY events yet but plan on doing so, but I have definitely used what I learned there since.
