HOBY youth leadership questionss

Hi, I am very interested in attending the HOBY Leadership program for sophomores, and have some questions:
1. When selecting the ambassador, does the selector take your gpa into consideration? (Mine is a 3.7 UW and I take the most rigorous classes possible in my school)
2. If so, would I still stand a good chance if I had really impressive extra curricular activities and leadership experience?
3. Who is the selector, someone from your school or someone from HOBY?
4. Do people who apply but don't get selected also receive a letter? And when do they announce the ambassador?
5. How do they select the ambassador?

Thanks!

It depends on your school. I would check with your GC. It depends how many people from your school apply. Also who is willing to pay for this program? Often, schools do not have money to pay $350 per ambassador, so it is up to the parents to pick up the tab.

@seal16 Mine is a school in fairfax county, VA, and will pay for the whole trip.

Then check with your GC.

HOBY alum here. It’s amazing!

Most of your questions can be answered by an unsatisfactory “this depends on your school.” Someone from your school, usually the GC, selects the participant. The school should notify you about everything you need to know. I will also say that most schools are looking for leaders and students who challenge themselves, so don’t worry too much about the GPA.

HOBY Maryland alum!

Agree that is depends. If you are competing against other ppeople for the spot, then they may look at anything. It will be someone from your school selecting, not anyone from HOBY. My school picked up the tab, but thats just me.

For my school, GPA doesn’t factor in, it’s mostly based off of extracurricular and leadership. Our selector(s) were two or three faculty members from our school who (I hope) didn’t personally know any applicants. Everyone who applied received letters on their ambassador status, and we only found out who won from word of mouth
