Hockaday vs. Miss Porters

Hey everyone,

does anybody know about this 2 girl's schools? I want to apply to an all girls school and I am considering these 2. I know that Miss Porters is an all girl's prep school on the east nearer to big cities like New York, etc, and Hockaday is in Texas, which is a bit further, but that is not the most important, I want to know their college destination, academic challenges and their reputations.

Please kindly reply, Thanks in advance!

hockaday has relatively small boarding contingent (13%), and they’re k-12. that’s a huge difference, there’s girls that have been friends since KINDERGARTEN. it might be a little bit more difficult to break in, socially.

MPS on the other hand, is a lot more boarding-dominant. that’s the biggest difference right there.

Hockaday is also more academic. It is a very challenging school.

Have you gotten viewbooks for those schools yet? They contain a lot of information about those things.

But Hockaday is not from popular areas for schools like MA or CT, will that be an disadvantage?

Just have to jump in to say that Miss. Porter’s is absolutely as academically competitive as Hockaday. They are just two entirely different schools. Miss. Porter’s is one of the oldest boarding schools in the US, over 150 years old, and has always been considered a top girls school, and a leader in the field of girls boarding schools. It is 9-12, with strong college matriculation, and students from all parts of the US, and a strong international component too. Approximately 70% of the student body is made up of boarders. Regarding the area of the country, there is no comparison in how many boarding schools are in the vicinity, comparing Texas to New England. In a New England prep school such as MPS, you are competing in sports, etc. against other students from New England prep schools. At Hockaday, I imagine most of your competitors would be from nearby day schools. Again, these are just 2 entirely different choices.

I would not recommend Hockaday. I personally applied there a few years ago and was accepted, but decided not to attend. It is an extremely rigorous academic environment, which is great, but my experience there was not a positive one by any means.
