HOD and Careers

Can any current HOD students comment on the program, as well as the types of internships they've had and the types of companies that recruit HOD grads? What are the types of jobs (in business) that HOD grads get and what are some typical companies that hire HOD grads? Thanks so much!

Also interested in HOD. Can anyone currently in the program comment on it, as well as how a major in HOD with a minor in Econ or Managerial Studies would prepare you for a career (would it be more HR related or lean more towards consulting)?

I'm a senior HOD and Economics double major. My track is Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness. I like HOD a lot. The classes are fun and the professors are very accessible. It's probably the closest thing to a business major we have here.

Every HOD student is required to complete a semester long internship prior to graduation. You take a class once a week and then work 32 hours a week while completing assignments throughout the semester. There are several sites at which you can do your internship: Atlanta, Chicago, London, Nashville, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. You may also intern at a different city, but must apply for approval. To work in London you must complete a longer application and meet requirements that are not in effect for the American cities. I loved my internship and had a great experience. Keep in mind that even if you elect to complete your internship over the summer you will still have to pay tuition for the semester. I believe it is less because the summer program is 12 rather than 15 weeks like the spring and fall, but I could be wrong.

HOD majors get jobs in many different areas. This is probably because the different tracks are tailored toward different career interests. Also, many HOD students double major and the jobs in various industries may be a functon of the commonality of double majors.

I'm going to law school, but I had job offers as a management consultant and a financial analyst at a Fortune 100 company. My internships were finance related. One of them was through the HOD program and the other I got by contacting a Vanderbilt alum in my hometown. If I did not major in Economics as well, I doubt I could have done the internship at home.

A lot of HOD students pursue HR work or organizational consulting of some sort. I am not sure what sort of companies recruit HOD majors since I didn't interview with very many companies and I generally interviewed for positions that drew more heavily upon my Economics background.

I don't really know how much adding a minor in Econ or Managerial Studies to an HOD major would help. I considered minoring in Financial Economics but was told by an adviser to double major if possible. Double majoring in 4 years is doable and I would recommend it. Unfortunately I cannot give you a more definitive answer since I did not choose to minor in either of those areas.

Commodore08, thanks for your informative reply. Really appreciate the information and tips. Good luck in law school, and congratulations on your job offers!
