What do current students think about the Human Organizational Development (HOD) major? I read an article written by a Vandy student that basically bashed certain aspects of the major and described how other Vandy students look down at the major. Is any of this true? If yes then why is it still the most popular major at Vanderbilt?

I'm honestly quite ignorant of the HOD major requirements and whatnot, but I can tell you it is looked down upon by other vandy students. My friends and I are all pre-med and we always joke about switching to hod when we have a ton of work to do. One of my other friends actually is an hod major and says that she has a bunch of athletes in all of her classes as well. It's generally regarded as one of the easier majors, which is why it may be so popular. Plus, I think a lot of students major in Hod or econ since we don't have a business program.

If you are interested in the HOD program and Peabody College, I suggest you look into it, and not let the opinions of pre-meds sway you. Peabody would love to find high caliber students who are truly interested in their programs.

In general, Vanderbilt U is generous with merit scholarships. All of the colleges are looking for students who will improve their student profiles. If you fit that bill, it would be foolish of you (IMO) to dismiss the HOD program because someone else might look down on your chosen field of study.

To be honest, it does get bashed a lot. The thing I've found here is that so many people I meet on this campus seem to be strong in math and science, analytical, and facts-based thinking. I am not at ALL like that. I am a humanities, art, feeling, and people person and for me, HOD has been amazing. I think it's a left vs. right brain thing. HOD is VERY "right brain." It is a lot of group work, very creative, hands on, and takes a "think outside the box" approach to business concepts.

This semester I know of several non-HOD kids who are taking HOD classes and all of them have been really shocked and pleased with how interesting and worthwhile the classes are.

Just make sure you are thinking about what is most important to you: finding a program that enhances your strengths and that you find really beneficial to your life, or doing something that you don't enjoy so that other people will think you're "smart." haha for me it's been an easy choice.

My wife was a hod major, and ten years later she is still using what she learned in hod on her job every single day. True, they have a bunch of ath. in class but it doesnt mean that you are not learning anything. I believe I heard that HOD majors have the highest avg job income when they graduate than any other major. Who cares what anyone else thinks.

thanks for all your responses they are really helpful! I am actually going to sit in on a class this Monday so I'll check it out for myself

i just got accepted into peabody as an HOD major (i am a transfer student for this fall) and i have a few questions and would be deeply appreciative if anyone had great answers:

1) i know that vandy doesnt have an undergrad business school so i was wondering what people usually major in if they are interested in going into business (or am i better off not going to vanderbilt if i want to pursue business?)

2) are there limitations as an HOD major in peabody? for example if i wanted to go pre-med, or go into business, or psychology, are those attainable options while being in the peabody school? I’ve been talking to one of my friends who’s in A&S at vanderbilt and he was telling me about the HOD major and how i could go into any of these fields, he also mentioned that HOD has the highest job placement and starting salaries and will open many doors for me to get into a good grad school but i wasnt sure if he was just exaggerating

3) lastly, lastly, let’s say i decide i want to go into a different college at vanderbilt, for example arts and sciences, would that be possible to transfer into another college within the university as a transfer student? can transfer students transfer internally?

i know that was a lot but i just want to make sure i make the right decision by going to vanderbilt. i am currently enrolled at boston university and i know vanderbilt is definitely a big step up, but i just want to make sure i will be able to attain a career that i am interested in. would i be better off staying at BU if i am seriously considering business?

any answers that anyone has would be sincerely appreciated
