Hofstra - How's the campus feel?

My daughter likes the academic offerings she has researched for Hofstra (she has an interest in foreign landguage interest). I was warned on two other things however by collegaues - that the location/area is not so good (my daughter loves manhatten so she wants to try and get close)
Second warning was that the partying is heavy.

Can anyone please help with some firsthand experience? Also hoping to find some academic merit aid there if possible?
Thanks.

D is currently a sophomore. She has done really well and loves the school. The academics have been challenging and the course selection very varied. The campus is about a 30-45 minute train ride into the city and there is a shuttle that runs to the train station continually, although she tends to take a taxi to the Mineola station if she is going in during the day as it is more of an express train than the Hempstead line.

The surrounding area (like most places) has its good points and bad points. She does not go into Hempstead at all, but Garden City is where all of the malls/shopping/restaurants are located and that is only 5-10 minutes away and is a very nice area. Although she does not have a car, many of her friends do so they can get around.

She is on a Presidential Merit Scholarship (which range from around $15K-16K) per year, with a 3.0 GPA requirement to maintain the scholarship. They seem to offer many of these merit awards.

Like many campuses, yes there seems to be a "fair" amount of drinking. As a freshman, she lived in the freshman housing and found that weekends were rather "loud" and the kids were pretty rowdy. She is not a partier nor a drinker, but found others like herself who weren't either and did just fine.

As parents, we have been very happy with the whole experience that Hofstra has provided her so far. Good luck!

Am also looking into Hofstra , for my son, who is a HS senior. He is an international student , bilingual English, but attends school abroad where courses are not in English. I expect he may require some academic support services, so this is what attracted me.
Does anyone know the ratio male female of boarders?
